NJ Student Learning Standards
STANDARD 1.1 (Aesthetics) - All students will use aesthetic knowledge in the creation of an in response to dance, music, theater, and visual art.
STANDARD 1.2 (Creation and Performance) - All students will utilize those skills, media, methods, and technologies appropriate to each art form in the creation, performance, and presentation of dance, music, theater, and visual art.
STANDARD 1.3 (Elements and Principles) - All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of dance, music, theater, and visual art.
STANDARD 1.4 (Critique) - All students will develop, apply and reflect upon knowledge of the process of critique.

In S.T.E.A.M. 1 YOU WILL:
LEARN HOW TO DRAW using both hand drafting tools and computer programs with a focus on the fields of architecture, engineering, and design,
USE MATH FOR ALL ASSIGNMENTS because technical drawings require mathematical precision,
BE REQUIRED THINK WITHOUT THE USE OF THE INTERNET in order to learn how to problem solve with your own ideas,
PASS SAFETY QUIZZES BEFORE USING TOOLS & MACHINES - for saws, blades, sewing machines, a laser cutter, and metal working tools
DEMONSTRATE PROFESSIONALISM - in craftsmanship and presentation of all assignments and in the use of tools and materials
S.T.E.A.M. 1 (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) focuses on how math is applied in technical drawings created and used by architects, engineers, and designers using both hand-drafting tools and computer programs. You will spend the first marking period learning how to create technical drawings that demonstrate careful precision and measuring. The remainder of the year will focus on designing and creating technical drawings for hands-on assignments using: a laser cutting machine, hand woodworking tools, textile design applications, a sewing machine, cold-connections in metal jewelry, and painting & drawing techniques that focus on design, illustration, and color science. You will be expected to participate in randomly-chosen, group challenges to learn valuable, real-world collaborative problem solving, communication, and professionalism. This is a helpful course to take if you are considering a technical career and serves as a prerequisite for S.T.E.A.M. II.

S.T.E.A.M. II (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) follows the S.T.E.A.M. 1 course and is a rigorous application of skills and concepts acquired in the first year course. You will be challenged with more complex assignments that require a personal desire to learn. In this second-year S.T.E.A.M. II course, you will be expected to demonstrate professional presentation skills, responsible use of tools and machines, and independent work habits.

Mixed Media Design focuses on developing skills in a variety of hands-on techniques. You will explore the history of each technique and its function in the modern world. Examples of the skills that may be developed in this course include bookmaking, paper craft, calligraphy, textiles, fiber arts, weaving, jewelry making, printmaking, and hand-built forms. At the end of the year, you will be expected to develop a business plan that markets a selection of mixed media designs that you have created throughout the course.

This course is intended for those interested in gaining an introductory-level understanding and appreciation of art fundamentals, as well as those interested in building or strengthening their art skills in preparation for higher level courses. This course will help you to appreciate the joy of creating art and increases your understanding of the role of art and design in society. Upon completion and with teacher recommendation, this course may serve as a prerequisite for Advanced Art 1 (sequence track) as well as for Art Fundamentals II. You will be introduced to a variety of two and three-dimensional art materials and techniques, the elements and principles of design, and the importance of craftsmanship and professionalism in visual art.

Assignments will focus on further development of the following: a range of two and three-dimensional art techniques, command of the elements and principles of design, developing a style, and craftsmanship and professionalism in visual art.

Advanced Art 1-4 Sequence Track is for students who demonstrate a strong desire to build visual art skills, possess exceptional ability, are in grades 9-10 (for Advance Art 1 & 2), and have been recommended by an Art Teacher with the goal of continuing in the Sequence Track. This is intended to raise the level of expectation in our sequence track and to better serve the exceptional art students in our high school population.

This course is specifically for those who demonstrate a strong desire to build visual art skills and are recommended by an Art Teacher. The sequence track program in our Art department provides an opportunity for exceptional students to develop skills with the goal of continuing onto Advanced Art II. You will learn the elements and principles of design, artistic planning and professionalism, a variety of two and three-dimensional materials and techniques, and important cultural and historical art connections associated with each unit of study. This course is available to those students who have already taken Advanced Art I and earned a minimum final average of 85% . Though the format is essentially the same, the approach will feature additional criteria and continued development of style and technical mastery of materials. During common units of study (Advanced Art 1 & 2), the teacher will include additional criteria for Advanced Art 2 students to demonstrate with the continual goal of preparing students for Advanced Art 3. This course contains advanced content and is accelerated.

Students will focus on developing portfolio-quality pieces that demonstrate a refined level of technique and expression, personal style, and a strong understanding of ethics and plagiarism in use of copyrighted reference material for any artworks. The goal of this course is to prepare students for the AP Studio Art Exam. This course contains advanced content and is accelerated.

Advanced Art IV focuses on a sustained investigation of personal significance that demonstrates a sophisticated and independent concentration. Whether or not you are planning on submitting a portfolio for the AP Studio Art Exam, you will be expected to demonstrate the same level of inquiry in the form of 12 pieces that effectively communicate a chosen thematic investigation. This course contains advanced content and is accelerated.

The focus of AP Studio Drawing is on the actual use of tools and materials to not only create strong works of art, but to also be innovative in the use of mark making through a variety of drawing techniques. Technically, the art works can be produced in any media; wet or dry, including charcoal, graphite, pastel, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, oil paint and digital imagery to name a few. Students considering AP Art should already have successfully completed AT LEAST one previous year of Advanced Art. Because the AP portfolio requires 24 college level works of art, it is possible to begin building up a portfolio as an Advanced Art student, usually during the junior year, and then completing the portfolio during the senior year.

Technically, the art works can be produced in any media; wet or dry, including charcoal, graphite, pastel, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, and oil paint to name a few. The 2D Design portfolio is the format many students pursue if they have a strong background in digital imagery. Students considering AP Art should already have successfully completed AT LEAST one previous year of Advanced Art. Because the AP portfolio requires 24 college level works of art, it is possible to begin building up a portfolio as an Advanced Art student, usually during the junior year, and then completing the portfolio during the senior year.

Art in the digital age is no longer defined by the use of traditional mediums such as paint and clay but has expanded to include computer-generated designs, animations, 3D modeling, interactive website, games, and more. In Digital Art & Design, we will explore digital painting, photo editing, 3D modeling, animation, and software designed to turn your idea into reality. Those amazing digital projects will be used to design products like t-shirts, buttons, decals, 3D prints, social media profiles, and various other applications of your artwork. This course is designed to take your creative ideas and produce quality designs/products for the future. You will explore most of the Adobe creative cloud (photoshop, illustrator, animate, etc.)

WORK IN BOTH TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL ART- including painting, drawing, sculpting, animation, printing, etc.
LEARN PRINT PRODUCTION- binding, printing, paper stocks, and finishing techniques.
The art of storytelling has been forever intertwined with the ability to turn ideas into images. As stories have become more vast and complex; so have the opportunities for artists who are passionate about illustrating those ideas. In this course, we will explore various forms of illustration from movie posters, book design, to Comic Book/graphic novels, to animation, and more. By the end of the course, you will have the chance to see your illustrations in various books, comics and will produce your own graphic novel. The possibilities are endless. The course is a project-based course that will incorporate computer software, cameras, and traditional art mediums to illustrate anything from small ideas to complex stories.

LEARN BASIC CODING AND GAME LOGIC - use flowlab.io, Gdevelop, adobe animate, Dreamweaver, and others to produce games
LEARN BASIC HTML & JAVASCRIPT - using web development software like adobe Dreamweaver, note++, and others to produce simple websites and games.
We live in a digital age where gaming, websites, social media, mobile apps, and eCommerce have become a vital part of our society. Everyone is using technology in some way to live; whether to connect socially, for entertainment, for business, or for some combination of the three. In this course, we will delve into two major fields of interactive design which are gaming and web design. You will study gaming trends, types of games, and platforms while creating your own games. We will learn basic coding, game logic, interface design, and team development. By the end of the course, you would have made several small games and one complex game. As well as game design, we will learn how to optimize and design a website to showcase our games and other content by creating a digital portfolio. We will concentrate on using flowlab.io and Gdevelop but will also include Adobe applications like fuse, animate, photoshop, and illustrator.

Photography - Grade Level: 9- 12
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 200 minutes/week

Students will gain a solid foundation and understanding on creating photographic images using industry standard software and photo equipment. Through a hands-on approach students will develop knowledge of the elements of photography, fundamentals of capturing an image, importance of composition, lighting and effective use of camera controls and settings. Students will explore the use of lenses and filters, how to control aperture, depth of field, and motion. Students will develop a visual perception by exploring digital imaging, photography, video and post-production. In addition, they will build visual literacy skills and aesthetic appreciation through critique exercises and individual and group projects. Some projects will include black & white, macro, and portrait photography; creating a photographic essay in stills and video; photo manipulation-using programs of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; short movies, 1-5 minutes; movie spoof and trailer; Video editing using iMovie and Final Cut.

Photography II (Videography) - Grade Level: 10- 12

This course is designed to further student knowledge and skills learned in level I of Photography. Students will build on what they learned in Photography I, exploring more advanced techniques and equipment. Students will receive introductory training in video production and media analysis. Instruction will cover storyboarding, video script writing, field videography, and editing and production terms. By producing individual and group short film projects, students will learn how to use video production equipment to express their creativity and demonstrate their acquired skills. Students will also explore the history of film and television, and analyze various media sources for creativity and content. Photo and Video editing using the industry standard, Adobe Creative Cloud suite. (Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro)
