Pt England has a very strong culture of self review that includes staff, parents, guardians, students, BOT, CoL Schools, Researchers and Manaiakalani partners.
We frequently use the PMI framework for our review (Plus, Minus, Interesting) and these reflections are collected together on a separate website so that there is ease of collation and overview.
Back in 2010, we decided to cease publishing Annual Report Books, (which we did make public) and replace this work with a Report that was promoted publicly online. This idea was and is, in line with the Manaiakalani Learn, Create, Share pedagogy and is another way of sharing our learning and creativity. This approach was deemed a success by all concerned so along with our Board of Trustees, we continue using this mode. We hope you, (the reader) enjoy browsing our self review, and find this format pleasing to use and experience.
Our school currently enjoys a "Strong ERO Review" based on our own strong self review and ERO's view of our sustainable performance. This position is greatly assisted by Manaiakalani and the Woolf Fisher Research Centre who support our review, research and development.
In normal years we rely on termly meetings with the Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Niuean, Cook Is, Fijian, European and Asia-Pacific communities through the Families @ Pt England Programme. We have used these meetings to consult on areas of compliance and strategic planning as well as issues of interest to parents and community.
In 2022, we have only managed to have 3 meetings of this nature and some of the focus has been quite different.
We did manage to consult and engage over:
Our School Health Programme
The Manaiakalani Programme
Our 1:1 Digital Programmes and associated costs
Our te reo/tikanga Maori Programme
Our students’ academic progress
Academic performance and programmes for Maori & Pasifika
Strategic Planning
Reporting on annual targets and recommendations for the future.
Wellbeing Policies & Procedures
Y7 & Y8 Programmes for 2022 and on into 2023
We held a special meeting to consider "Digital Discipline" with Tony Laulu.
Our meetings were well attended and whānau were in good spirits.
Academic Programmes
We still have very steady and clear trends in Reading, Writing and Maths and we are clear about the need to implement the recommendations of the Woolf Fisher Research Centre along with that of the Manaiakalani Research Team and our own co-constructed analysis and synthesis.
We are very pleased to report that even through these years of COVID and very disrupted learning, on average our tauira have still made 1 year's progress in a year in Reading and Maths, and 1.5 year's progress in Writing. Our goal remains, to get sharp acceleration in all three, and to see school wide performance improvement in all three, but we are really pleased not to have gone backwards during COVID.
In order to improve three subjects at once, we have agreed that we will continue the focus on practices that lie behind successful learning and teaching in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. These are:
practices that improve Language Acquisition, development, transfer and sustaining.
Learning design with particular focus on progressions, identified "pillars of practice", differentiation and formative assessment.
The Manaiakalani Kahui Ako has also agreed to focus on:
Scaling up of identified high leverage practices in Reading
Identification of high leverage practices in Mathematics
Our cluster of 12 Manaiakalani schools has continued to share and moderate data across schools and a great deal of robust knowledge and information comes out of this sharing and discussion and out of the Teacher Inquiries into Practice.
We have continued working with Woolf Fisher Research Centre along with our own Manaiakalani R & D Team and enjoy the real time querying capability we now have with EdPotential
During 2022, we have had effective Principal and CoL Teacher Meetings, Middle Manager meetings, School Leader meetings, SENCO meetings as well as termly Boards Forum meetings and one day long Wananga. These have all helped us to have effective self review. We have held regular meetings with Academics including Dr Rebecca Jesson, and the Manaiakalani Research & Development Team. These people have contributed to the development and increased understanding of Learn Create Share and effective practices with which to raise teacher capability and have enabled us to codify these practices in order to scale improvement.
Our previous Board did an outstanding job, and due to COVID-19 met much more frequently than were accustomed to, and as a result were very well informed about how things had. We have had a good transition to our new Board, with two members staying on and are happy with the growing evaluative capability of this Board.
Our Board has held effective, purposeful and harmonious Board Meetings. Well done all!
Our BOT is to be congratulated for helping navigate the school through a most unusual year. The Board has been reflective, responsive and extremely supportive.
This Board continues to support the Manaiakalani Programme and its Outreach and has continued to show great manaaki to other schools and organisations in this community, across New Zealand and into the International Community.
Thanks BOT.
