Te Reo me ona Tikanga Māori

NE - Yr 6 . Initially this Programme was fairly disrupted as Whaea Maryanne was on extended sick leave in Term 1. Helen Squires, Ngakirikiri Kershaw and the classroom teachers picked up this programme and delivered lessons to our children in the second half of Term 1. During Term 2 Whaea Kiri (Ngakirikiri Kershaw) was appointed to this position and we were able to consistently deliver a quality programme in the classrooms each week to set the teachers up with learning that they can reinforce throughout the week.

Every Team have continued to have mihi and karakia in the daily routines or as part of the various Team Assemblies and gatherings that happen throughout the course of a week. We have continued to develop a number of digital artefacts to support the delivery of this programme. We are currently focussed on refining the planning and learning continuum for this area.

Yr 7/8 classes - Whaea Kelly has share the responsibility for the delivery of this programme with Zac Moran. Our students can confidently mihi and have an understanding of the Tikanga around Mihi.

Schoolwide waiata - It is great to see that we now have a number of waiata that the whole school can sing confidently. This is an area that we will continue to grow and develop in 2023 both in the classrooms and at school Assemblies. During Lockdown Whaea Ngakirikiri is continuing to build on to this collection making these artefacts visible and rewindable so that teachers and teams came practise them. We are lucky to have such a taonga leading in this space.

'Learn Create and Share'

It has been great to see classes and the various shared learning spaces including an element of tikanga and te reo Māori - karakia and mihimihi have become a part of 'the way' and continue to happen on a daily basis. A plan is underway to revamp The Māori @ PES site with the hope that the new site will be ready in 2023. There has been continued and thoughtful attention being given to our school 'Values' having an associated tag line in Te Reo Māori, and our various weekly korero are frequently delivered in Māori. This year our major them was 'Kua riro māu', - It's up to you!

Kapa Haka

Manaia ki te Rangi - Senior Kapa Haka and Pounamu Kapa Haka Team 4

With continued disruptions and the adherence to COVID guidelines Our Senior Kapa Haka Roopu didn't get back together to start having practises until Term 3. This began with separate practises for the Yr 7 & 8s and Yr 4- 6s. This combined Yr 5 - 8 group, tutored by Whaea Kiri will open our Senior Prizegiving.

It has been noted that in 2023 we need to purchase and replenish the uniforms for this group. A further goal, is to capture digitally the korero that was woven into the design of the bodices and tipare when these were made a number of years ago.

Te Ahorangi Kapa Haka Teams 1, 2 & 3

This group prepared and performed in the Junior Prize Giving. There are a growing number of children in this area of the school who want to participate in Kapa Haka. They are all included initially and then a performance group is chosen from the two practising groups as they come together for their performance at the Junior Prizegiving. Ngā mihi ki a koe Whaea Kiri, it is great to see the enthusiasm and kaha within this group that grows out of the classroom experience they have weekly.

Recommendations for next year:

Most of the following goals were initially set in 2020 however as we have had such a disrupted few years these remain relevant

  • The development of the Maori Site and making learning both visible and rewindable is a valued resource that supports this - this is ongoing as new Waiata etc. are learnt.

  • An annual visit by set year levels to Marae (Ruapotaka/Orakei) to ensure all PES students will have this experience.

  • Tataiako staff team to tautoko the Kapa Haka groups and Staff and we continue to grow in this space

  • Finish costuming for all groups

  • Have regular Whakawhanaungatanga to ensure we are meeting the needs of our Tangata Whenua Community. Once a term to start with with Tataiako team to advise and lead.

  • Ongoing PD for staff in consultation and collaboration with Ngati Paoa in the following areas:

    1. Maori perspectives

    2. Tikanga related to Inquiry focus

    3. Tikanga related to learners, parents and wider whanau

    4. Waiata and Himene for various occasions

    5. Karakia and acknowledge this accordingly.
