Improving student health, well-being, fitness and engagement with whanau continues to be our focus. After 2 years of covid restrictions our students were able to participate in more interactive, physical activities this year.
In late January, our first event was providing ball boys and ball girls for the annual World Schools U18's Rugby 7's tournament held at the Pakuranga rugby club. This is a great opportunity to learn new life skills and to serve the wider community. But at the start of school in Term 1, we went into a final period of time with covid limitations.
From Term 2 onwards, our students were able to play inter-school sport in rippa rugby, football, volleyball, netball, rugby union, rugby league, basketball, cricket, touch and athletics. The eleven netball teams completed an uninterrupted full season, last achieved in 2019. Our Year 3's and 4's completed water safety lessons and we were finally able to host our cross country and athletics day events with whanau on site.
All of the sporting events in Terms 2 & 3 has been made possible by numerous staff members and volunteers. We must acknowledge their contribution, especially while I was absent on medical leave for just over 2 terms. In particular, thank you to the Garth Jacobsen who was the acting sports coordinator; the Administration Staff for school-student communication - Leigh Flavell, Roz Takerei, Charlotte Sorenson, Donna McMillan; Tyson Puru, Timmi Nouata and Zac Moran who coached and managed teams, sorted equipment and uniforms for game days and Hannah West for organising videographers, highlights and notices on PENN plus staff who coached or managed a netball team.

I have the use of a school phone to be accessible for whanau to contact me regarding any sporting queries.
For most of the events, we used the Kiwicoaches bus services to transport teams. We'd like to thank Garth Jacobsen's for the use of his personal van and Soana Pomaka and Neil McInteer for allowing us free access for the use of the Tamaki College vans.

There is a list of coaching and management staff in the spreadsheet above. We had a total of 36 people (24 staff members & 12 from our community - parents, former students, aunties and friends of the school). Our sports programme would not be possible without their immense contribution.
House captains for 2022 were:
Te Aurere (red): Jordan Matagitau, Latiana Valoa Simanu
Hikianalia (yellow): Jezer Timoteo, Jade Edwards
Hine Moana (blue): Lucian Ioane, Finau Faleta
Hokule'a (green): Lincoln Gataua, Ema Kulitapa
This year we added a few new parts to the House captains role. At the weekly assembly, they would give out the sports certificates, share a motivational quote and announce the winners of the House competition for the week. We introduced the use of coloured tokens as a way of earning house points. Students earn a token for their house as a reward for good behaviour.
Sports gear is available for students to play with, during the break times at 3 different locations. Year 1-4 have a trolley of gear at lunchtime-only which the Year 6 sporty botz monitors manage outside the staffroom. For both the morning tea and lunchtime breaks - Team 4 has a trolley of gear outside their classrooms and the Team 5 students borrow gear from a large container outside the sports shed. The Year 7 sporty botz monitors are in charge of the return of Team 4 and 5 gear.
Hannah West, our Creative Space teacher has trained and organised a large team of videographers to attend sporting events for recording. Their duties include collecting the gear: camera, tripod and camera cover. A few of the videographers also edit the recording for archives and PENN highlights. The same footage is accessible for Hannah to create the end of year primary & intermediate Sportsman and Sportswoman awards.
Acknowledging the team of Year 6-8 videographers: Jeyda Motuliki, Khyani Riki-Pairama, Finau Faleta, Lesieli Katoa, Naomi Edmonds, Blessing Herbert, Leon Tupou, Lennox Lewis, Ciannah Farrell, Hailey Clark and Aniqua Lauvaka.
For the second time this year (January & this December 17-18), we have been asked to provide ball boys and ball girls for the World Schools Rugby 7's tournament (an Under 18 international event) at the Pakuranga rugby club. In January we had 12 ball boys and girls working across 2 fields. In December, this number will increase to a team of about 24 Year 6-8 students due to a larger tournament over 2 full days and 3 fields.
Sports is a huge part of our school life, engaging a lot of our students and community. Due to the success of our programme, I would recommend the following:
Improve communication with students and whanau (ie. facebook, school APP, text, phone call, email, sports site, team assemblies)
'Meet the Coach' evening for whanau
Create an easy to view Term and Yearly plan for our Physical Education and Sports programme
Create rubrics for students for physical education reporting outcomes and for participating in sport
Transport - van/s
