The extension programme at Point England School is designed to provide opportunities to support, challenge and widen the scope of learning for those children who have been noted as being academically competent and talented.
The Point England Network News (PENN) is created by a group of reliable children who are capable readers and speakers. Being a presenter for the news provides an opportunity for these children to develop confidence, listening and speaking, reading skills and leadership. PENN provides an opportunity to extend a wider group of children who are not especially in the year 5 & 6 and year 7 & 8 extension groups. A number of competent and enthusiastic presenters have joined the team this year who are not in the extension classes. A group of passionate videographers and photographers have also joined the team and have been developing their confidence in leadership through this role. iMovie editing has also continued, this year through children supporting the editing of sports movies as well as blooper movies from the presenters.
Finau and Aye are two examples of year 8s who have excelled in movie making this year. Finau’s strength in movie editing has been evident and Aye’s directing abilities have really shone.
The Year 5 & 6 Extension group typically met for 1.5 hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.
All extension children, as well as a number of other children from year 5 - 6 were given the opportunity to compete in the 2021 Kiwi Competitions, run by the University of Canterbury. We had a Year 5 child this year gain an Excellence mark for the Maths competition. We also had a number of Merit results.
In term 1, the Year 5 & 6 extension children completed a project into New Zealand wildlife and what our responsibility is to protect it at an individual level, school level, and wider community level. They presented their projects using coding in Scratch.
In term 2, the Year 5 &6 Extension group did a research project on ‘Our Heritage’. They researched their own family history, learning about an interview process and open and closed questions.
In term 3, they worked on an art project for our inquiry, Art Works. The topic we chose was Archaeological finds. The children had to choose and research an archaeological find that interests them and then express this through digital art using Photopea.
In term 4, the year 5 & 6 extension group did a project learning about the Global Goals. They did a collaborative project with Waka Kōtahi, learning about the Public Transport in Auckland and the way forward.
The Year 7 & 8 Extension group typically met for 2 hours every Wednesday morning.
In term 1, the year 7 & 8 extension children completed a project learning about Whakatauki/Māori proverbs. They had to choose a proverb which they resonated with and then use coding in Scratch to create a digital medium artwork to express the chosen whakatauki. Here is a blog post with some of their creations.
Term 2 - We Know the Way
In Term 2, the year 7 & 8 extension group began to research the history of the Tāmaki area. This term was highly interrupted with much illness so this research task was what was achieved.
In term 3, the children explored cultures from around the world and created some digital art pieces to portray these cultures.
In term 3, the year 7 & 8 extension group also had the opportunity to attend KPMG for a day learning about corporate life as well as some learning about photoshop and photo editing.
In term 4, the children have been collaboratively working on creating their own Escape Rooms.
In term 4, the year 7 & 8 extension group also had the opportunity to attend KPMG for a day learning about corporate life as well as some learning about mental health. We were visited by Amber from Synergy Health in Christchurch.
For the first time since 2020, we had children from each class (Year 1 up to Year 8) present our film festival movies live at Hoyts Cinema in Sylvia Park. This is an opportunity to extend children with their public speaking capabilities and confidence. All the children did a fantastic job and represented the school incredibly.
This Whale Tales project provided a great opportuntiy to extend some of our budding artists and to give them leadership opportunities. We opened up a competition to the school to design their own whale tale design and then chose some of the best designs to create our final design.
This year we had an exciting opportunity to be part of an environmental programme with the Rotoroa Island Education Trust. We had some education days in school and then a special day trip out to Rotoroa Island with our Year 5 students.
This year we have continued to host visitors to our school. Our tamariki have had multiple opportunities this year to see the power of the Learn-Create-Share pedagogy, use their blogs to interact with their audience who participate and contribute to their learning through this medium. This continues to be hugely motivating for the children, with some children having written hundreds of blog posts over their time at school.
A notable visitor we have hosted this year has included Mitchell Pham, the Digital Council of Aotearoa Chair. A couple of our year 8 students had the opportunity to interview him and some students were able to participate in the videography of the visit.
We look forward to continuing to inspire and motivate our tamariki through connecting with groups outside of our school to learn, create and share in a way that benefits the wider community and continues to teach valuable skills of leadership, responsibility, speaking and presenting and being able to make a difference in society.
