Research, Development, Standardised Testing & Academic Performance
A more detailed rendition of this is given under the Self Review and Assessment tabs of this Charter/Reporting Site.
During 2022 We have received the following sets of evidence and analysis to consider at a cluster level:
Here's a great learner generated example of what Learn, Create, Share looks like :
As in previous years, we have a wonderful collation of data, both external and internal from which to deduce and firm up our trend information and analysis.
The Manaiakalani Outreach Data, the Manaiakalani Cluster Data, Pt England School Data, the CoL Teacher Inquiries and our own Teacher Inquiries cohere very strongly with each other. This is a very good position to be in. Although, as always, there are things we badly need to improve, it is enormously helpful to have this large body of evidence and knowledge confirming what we have to do.
We continue to prove in Pt England School, the Manaiakalani CoL and Manaiakalani Outreach, that we are able to make at least 1.5 year's progress in 1 academic year in Writing.
We are able, when conditions are optimal, to make 1.5 year's progress in 1 academic year in Reading.
We are able, when conditions are optimal, to make 1.5 year's progress in 1 academic year in Maths.
We have not yet achieved this consistently in a wide number of classrooms across all 3 core subjects. This we must do.
We have identified teachers in our school, across our cluster and across the outreach who have been able to do this, albeit in a limited way and we have begun work using them in our Reading Practice Intensive pilot lead by our Research Team, in order to scale this out and make it widely available across our rohe. We are now getting underway to do this in Maths.
It is well worth noting that even in the worst phases of COVID-19 the Manaiakalani learners, including those in our own school still managed by average 1 year's progress in an academic year in Reading and Maths and 1.5 year's progress in Writing.
This is a spectacular result and needs to be celebrated!
2022 saw Pt England School achieve school wide acceleration in Writing
Except in specific classrooms, we did not achieve this accelerated progress in Reading and Maths, with the majority of learners making one year's progress in the academic year.
For more specific information please our Analysis of Variance Page
The Pt England Management Team, supported by our partners learning and the evidence mentioned above, have decided that we need to continue the focus begun in 2019. To build Teacher knowledge, capability and understanding that sits behind all 3 core subjects. This will require focus on:
Language acquisition, development, sustaining and transfer relating to Self Regulation
Learning design across subjects, including understanding and proficiency with the Learning Progressions
Whanau engagement in learning
Critical Literacy & extended discussion
Wellbeing & Mental Health
The Key Competency of Managing Self
Pt England will continue using the learnings from the Engage Programme that helps embed self regulation in our young learners and will continue for the next 2 years with the Mitey mental health programme for all learners and teachers
The convergence of Inquiry, Observation, Assessment and Research has continued to sharpen the focus for what we need to plan, design and implement next.
We would encourage all readers of this report to read the National Standardised Testing portion of this Charter/Review site.
Writing Improvement
Approximately 75% of our learners made 1 - 1.5 yr's progress in Writing.

Manaiakalani & Learn, Create, Share
The Learn Create Share pedagogy is a focus of development every year. As mentioned above, each staff member conducts an Inquiry into Practice, the published version of which can be found on the "About Us" page of the Pt England Website.
We are busy reviewing our local curriculum design as a necessary and valuable post COVID activity so that we can effectively and coherently deliver through the Learn, Create, Share pedagogical framework the items previously listed:
Manaiakalani Class OnAir continued for its seventh year in 2022, under the Supervision of Anne Sinclair and leadership of Matt Goodwin. Check out the work of Zac Moran and Kelsey Parrant as fantastic examples of what this wonderful work is like. This great resource is being used as training and support content for teachers in the 120 Manaiakalani Schools around Aotearoa, along with Trainee Teachers in the Colleges of Education and teachers and schools internationally.

Manaiakalani
The expanded story of Manaiakalani 2022 can be found at: http://www.manaiakalani.org and at:
http://www.manaiakalani.blogspot.com
The programme goals remain unchanged.
The Digital Fluency Intensive, turned out yet again to be one the most successful and satisfying PLD options available in 2022. On the strength of this we have built out and developed the Reading Practice Intensive during this year. This programme will now be offered out widely across the Manaiakalani Rohe in 2023. Based on this success we are now working on setting up a Maths Practice Intensive and have advertised a Maths Facilitation position.
During 2022 we added whole new cluster in Horowhenua, a group of Kura a Iwi and some single schools in Sth Auckland.
We continue to work with MOE and DIA to push for "Last Mile" equity solutions for those who are not getting a fair digital access deal. We are currently involved in developing a budget bid to go to cabinet.
Manaiakalani Community of Learning
Our CoL Teachers have conducted their inquiries with diligence during 2022 and at the time of reporting many are being interviewed to continue in these positions for 2023.
By the time you read this report, they will have all delivered their annual Report Back, via our annual "Bursts and Bubbles" event held online this year, and watched by members of Manaiakalani and Manaiakalani Outreach.
Pt England CoL teachers in 2022 were Kelsey Parrant, Hannah West and Clarelle Carruthers.
Manaiakalani Kahui Ako Teachers below:
As mentioned above, we have been blessed to be able to hold a number of kanohi ki te kanohi cluster and network events this year. These have been a real success and there has been a real sense of joy at being able to be "back in the house" together, doing things we used to take for granted.
The Cook Island Teachers' Summit took this to another level and Dorothy is to be congratulated for pulling off such a massive win, with her combo of Cook Island team mates and Manaiakalani team mates.
Creative Space
Hannah West has done an outstanding job again this year. PENN has continued to thrive as a flagship operation in our school. Hannah has done a brilliant job of inspiring both learners and teachers with her various programmes and creativity. She has kept the relationship with KPMG flourishing and did a superb job helping to get our content ready for the Film Festival and then managing all the presenters on the day.
Hannah goes into 2023 as a both a Class OnAir Teacher and a CoL Within Schools teacher. Congratulations!
Maker Space
Its been great to have Jackson back at school more this year and our gardens have really flourished. The gardening programme and the QR Codes and two very different but equally powerful innovations for our school.
Well done Jackson!
For more detailed information about the Maker Programme please visit the Maker Space Programme Report.
Te reo me ona tikanga Maori
We farewelled Maryanne Waipouri this year after she was seriously affected by a traffic accident. We are extremely pleased and grateful to have whaea Ngakirikiri Kershaw picking up this work and she has added real pizaz to our kapa haka roopu.
We were very pleased to be able to include the content gifted to us by Ngāti Paoa in our development of the New Zealand Histories Curriculum which we have begun implementing and will carry on with next year.
We will be re-visiting Ta Taiako as we plan for 2023.
Thanks so much Kiri!
Pasfika Success
Thanks again to Sandy Lagitupu for doing an outstanding job of helping our large Pasifika population to celebrate the Pasifika Language Weeks this year. Each week has been well celebrated on the Pt England News Network and supported by live performances of dance and language at Assembly on Fridays. Sandy is also working to set up an online Niuean Language class for our learners of Niuean heritage.
We are looking forward to holding a Fiafia again in term 1 2023 and are looking forward to revisiting Tapa Sa as we plan for next year.
We have been able to hold 3 Families@Pt England meetings, and have had good engagement at each. It has been very pleasing to to get this programme properly underway again. Tony Laulu made a great contribution with his Digital Discipline programme at our first meeting of the year.
The Manaiakalani Learn, Create, Share Programme has proven successful for Pasifika and Maori learners, where it is adhered to properly. Our on going commitment to education research with Woolf Fisher Research Centre means that we have robust metrics for analysing and discussing the success of this work.
Our Pasifika Fanau engage with us in discussing the children's work both at a parent community layer and at a Board's Forum level as well as with our own school based Boards of Trustees.
Y7/8 Specific Obligations
Technicraft
Our Y7's and Y8's have walked to Tamaki College twice a week for Technicraft. The programme gets evaluated twice yearly and we continue to work with Tamaki College to improve what our children receive. We will continue this programme in 2023.
Languages
Our whanau/aiga have continued to support our Y7/8 language for direct instruction being te reo Maori. This programme has continued its earlier success and continued to elevate the significance of Maori in our school. Our thanks goes to Whaea Ngakirikiri for her work in this area. We expect to continue this delivery in 2023
Careers
We finally got back to holding F2F Future Aspirations and had a simpply marvellous experience with our Pt england Alumni presenting to our current students. Thanks to Mrs Nua and Mr Wiseman for their efforts in organising this.
Sports Performance
Just as we were becoming able to get back into sport again, outside our own gates, our dear Miss Va'afusuaga had to take 6 months off school to look after her health. We are extremely grateful to her for setting us up in such a way we could carry on, and to Mr Jacobsen for being the gap filler par excellence! We made it through a whole netball season with 11 teams in action and managed to field teams for just about all the cluster and zone competitions. Our teachers really stepped up and we are SO grateful as we had so many children who just wanted to get out and play!
Once Miss Va'afusuaga returned we were able to increase our participation again and we all feel really blessed by what we have been able to achieve in a very challenging year.
For more detail, view the Sport/PE Report in the Programme section of this Review.
Kiwi Sport/Sport Auckland
Sport Auckland was unable to supply the previous years' funding model in 2022. I am grateful to Chris Herlihy who applied for Tū Manawa funding which we were able to use to pay for Kelly Sports to an approximation of our previous Kiwi Sport programme could continue. Manaiakalani schools also contributed their Kiwi Sport funding to this programme approach
535 Pt England students have participated in Kiwi Sport and the school contributed all of its $7,900.52 Kiwi Sport Funding to the Manaiakalani Sports Cluster Fund to pay Kelly Sports for this delivery.
Programme Performance
Our Special Programmes are all reported on in detail by the people carrying out that work in the Programme Section of this Review.
