A bluebook is a special notebook given to students when reading a novel for space to answer questions and write responses that can then be graded by a teacher. It is made up of about twenty lined pages, and is normally formatted during class under instruction of a teacher. By the end of the unit or novel, the written analysis is graded to asses the student's understanding of the novel.
You will receive a survey at the end of 11th Grade. All courses are HL Language and Literature Year 2 aligned, they are just different themes! Pick them based on interest and what you are most excited to study. Warning- we may not be able to accommodate your 1st choice which is why we ask for you to rank your interest! There are other schedule constraints that could get in the way of you getting your first choice.
The English Department follows the published BPHS revision policy. It is best to focus on your teachers' comments and see what they suggest for English revision. If they haven't left detailed comments go back to the rubric and see what is there. What have you done? What are you missing? If you only fix language and editing issues you won't see a big jump in your grade. Generally, you want to focus on analysis revision!
There are 4 major IB Assessments. The Individual Oral, The HL Essay, Paper 1, and Paper 2. *Students may not repeat the analysis of any text or non-literary work for any assessment, once the text has been used they must use a different text for all subsequent assessments.*
The Individual Oral is a 15 Minute Oral Presentation that happens at the end of 11th Grade (It is the 11th Grade Final). Students analyze a literary and non-literary extract in connection to a Global Issue of their choosing
The HL Essay happens in the middle of 12th Grade. Students write an Analytical Essay that focuses on a different global issue and analyzes EITHER a literary work or a non-literary work that they didn't use for their Individual Oral
Paper 1 and Paper 2 which happens at the end of 12th Grade
Paper 1 is a guided analysis of two previously unseen non-literary texts. Students receive a guiding question from the IB about each text, and students are expected to analyze the purpose of various stylistic devices and their effects on the audience paper 2 is an on-demand comparative literary analysis of two literary texts over the entire 2-year course. Students receive four previously unseen questions, select one to answer, and write a comparative analysis. Again these texts cannot be texts the student used for a previous assessment.
The IB HL Language and Literature Course have a focus on both literary texts and non-literary texts. Literary texts such as novels, poetry, plays, and non-fiction prose, cover the literature portion of the course. However, the IB also mandates a study of non-literary texts which make up the Language component of the course. Studying texts such as Instagram, movies, videos, cartoons, advertisements, etc. are all considered non-literary texts and we are expected to spend approximately equal time on them as to literary texts. The study of non-literary texts provides students with the tools to analyze the author's purpose, intended audience, stylistic devices & their effects, and even bias. In our media-saturated society, these skills are equally important to traditional literary analysis.
In order to Graduate on Time, you need to earn 8 credits of English. Each semester of English counts as 1 Credit. Two semesters are in a year, therefore in order to graduate on time, you need to pass every semester of English or be enrolled in Summer School to make up missing Credits. This is the case for all Seniors regardless of IBDP status.
A Literary Work is anything you can do a literary analysis of examples include: novels, plays, novellas, poetry, graphic novels, and non-fiction prose. Body of Work is a collection of non-literary works by the same author or creator. Examples include Instagram accounts, blogs, movies, music videos, advertisements, and articles from various sources.
