Personnel : Krishnaswami S, Benchamin KV, Nusarath Muneera
Project Period :1979-1980
Objectives :Preservation of eggs for short period of one month.
Results/Recommendations :Practical hatchability of 80% and above in a day was obtained upto 15 days in refrigeration of eggs (5°C) followed by acid treatment and upto 13 days in acid treatment followed by refrigeration. In the first method the viability of eggs continued to range from 70-75% throughout upto 30 days whereas in the second method it reduced rapidly below 70% beyond 18 days of refrigeration. Both the methods are therefore good for a very short period of 15 days preservation. Refrigeration of eggs followed by acid treatment appears to be better for preservation of eggs for 15-30 days period.

Project Period :1986-1987
Objectives :PCN is a new bivoltine race introduced to rainfed areas. The techniques followed for established, bivoltines were tested for its suitability/modifications to handle PCN and its hybrid seeds.
Results/Recommendations :
· Response to hot acid treatment: NB18 x PCN seed at specific gravities of 1.06 or 1.07 requires 4 to 6 minutes dipping. At 1.08 specific gravity 2 to 6 minutes dipping gave satisfactory hatching.
· Response to cold acid treatment: 60 to 90 minutes dipping in case of cold acid treatment (at room temperature) was found good to handle PCN and its hybrid seeds.
· Hibernation studies with PCN and its hybrid seeds: From the results it is clear that the present handling technique followed for bivoltine holds good for PCN and its hybrid seed crop
· Effect of oviposition and time of acid treatment on hatching: Results indicated that the eggs oviposited at 22°C can be acid treated when they are 14-30 hrs old. At 25°C the eggs should be 14-22 hrs old. At 28°C beyond 18 hrs and at 31°C beyond 14 hrs old eggs do not respond to acid treatment. Satisfactory and the hatching percentage is poor.

Project Title :Effect of hot water treatment and for prevention of diapause and hatchability of RD1 breed (Polyvoltine) of silkworm Bombyx mori. L.
Personnel : Sharad D. Jadhav, Puttegowda KN
Project Period :1996-1997
Objectives :To prevent diapause in the eggs of a RD1 breed of (polyvoltine) silkworm Bombyx mori by using hot water treatment.
Results/Recommendations :
· The study revealed that, the immersion of eggs in hot water at 54.5°C for 5 and 6 seconds time duration were found suitable for prevention of diapause and initiated good embryonic development. Duration of treatment possibly played a paramount role to obtain a uniform hatching in RD1 races similar to respective HCl treated control batches.
· Hot water treatment at temperature 54.5°C for 5 & 6 seconds duration to prevent diapause in polyvoltine (RD1). Silkworm eggs as an alternative to HCl treatment, since it is simple, efficient and economical and can be exploited as a routine procedure in the interest of the industry.

Project Title :Studies on the mating duration and its effect on the egg laying capacity of silkworm Bombyx mori L. of bivoltine races and its relation with hatchability.
Personnel : Premkumar, Vindhya GS
Project Period : 2001-2002
Objectives :
· The effect of mating duration on egg yield and viability/hatching.
· Utilization of male moths for repeated mating and its effect on egg production and hatching.
Results/Recommendations :It can be concluded that at the time of shortage of males they can be utilized for multiple mating provided some rest should be give in between the matings. There is no harm in using the males for 2 or 3 times in the production of commercial seed. But in case of reproductive seeds the males should not be utilized more than once. In order to increase the egg production and to get over the shortage male moths, multiple usage of males has to be practiced.

Project Title :Studies on egg production index in some newly evolved multivoltine breeds of silkworm Bombyx mori L.
Personnel :Debnirmalya Gangopadhyay, Ravindra Singh, Premalatha
Project Period :2002-2003
Objectives :To know the effect of differential female pupal weight coupled with differential male cocoon shell weight on fecundity, hatchability and percentage of non-viable eggs by utilizing the new evolved multivoltine silkworm breeds namely BL67 and 96A.
Results/Recommendations :It may be concluded that though weight of male cocoon shells was highly correlated to fecundity and percentage of non-viable eggs, the female pupal weight was found to be the best parameters for estimating them in Bombyx mori. The results also indicated a higher positive correlation between seasons and fecundity and percentage of non-viable eggs and of the season studied, Jan-Feb'2003 was found to be the most favourable for higher fecundity and for reduction of non-viable eggs in proportion to the female pupal weight and male cocoon shell weight.
