In Manchester we had two incidents occur, the first of which was the result of the physical layout, i.e., the separation of the courts.
1. The other coach and I were far away watching doubles when a scoring problem occurred in singles—a discrepancy over the score involving the two players. Apparently a fan offered a suggestion as to how to fix it. Never, never, never allow a fan to dictate the game in any way. No coaches were around, but if it happens again, have someone text me, or call me—you all have my cell number (860-614-7304—I sometimes answer it.) Better still, resolve the conflict. Talk to the other player—away from the fans—and agree on the last score that you knew was correct, then pick up the game from that spot.
2. The next issue involved a line call. Our player called a ball wide and was questioned about it. She responded by saying "I think so," then asked me to verify it. No can do—it’s your call. And unless you know you were wrong (in which case, say so and overturn the call) do not engage in any further discussion. Remember, if you’re unsure, it’s in and there’s no call. Otherwise, call it out. Period. Then play on. (Incidentally, not that it matters much, but the ball was out by a few inches.)
