From what I've seen in the state individual tournament, if you're not at least a 3.5 player, you won't go far, if you make it at all.
You may get in because you've played some easy opponents, but you won't last long, and you certainly won't make it to Day Two.
To get beyond that opening round, you have to aspire to play more smoothly and move more quickly. A 4.5 player has great footwork, whereas a 3.5 is just okay.
Take a look at these two videos to have a better idea of what I mean, and then imitate the young ladies in them. A little work can move you from a 3.5 to a 4.0 to a 4.5. If you want to be the state singles champion, keep adding on numbers.
