DEPARTMENT COURSE SEQUENCE: PE 9- Health- PE 10- PE 11.

Health - Level 3

Prerequisite:  None

The aim of Health at Plainville High School is to provide students with comprehensive health knowledge and the skills they need to live a healthy life.  Health prepares students for their adult life responsibilities to self, family, and community involvement.  Course focus includes but is not limited to human sexuality, teen pregnancy, disease prevention, AIDS/HIV, substance abuse, stress, body wellness, nutrition, and eating disorders. Units in this course, in combination with Physical Education 9-1 or 9-2, fulfill the 1.0 Health & Safety education credit requirement in the Plainville Community Schools requirements for graduation.

Physical Education 9-1 or 9-2 - Level 3

Prerequisite:  None

Physical education at the Grade 9 level is designed to introduce lifelong skills and physical activities to encourage overall physical fitness.  All grade 9 students are required to participate and complete the state of Connecticut Physical Fitness Test as part of the PE 9 curriculum.  In addition, all grade 9 students will complete a mandatory swim unit to fulfill a graduation requirement at Plainville High School.  This includes instruction in water safety and drowning prevention. Units related to nutrition, physical health, and First Aid & CPR are taught during the course. PE 9 is designed to expose students to as many activities as possible to encourage lifelong participation and appreciation for physical activity.  Students must pass PE 9 in order to take PE 10. Units in this course, in combination with Health, fulfill the 1.0 Health & Safety education credit requirement in the Plainville Community Schools requirements for graduation.

Physical Education 10-1 or 10-2 - Level 3

Prerequisite:  PE 9

Physical education at the Grade 10 level continues to introduce new physical activities as well as expand upon those taught in PE 9 to prepare students for PE 11/12.  Students in PE 10 will complete the mandated state of Connecticut Physical Fitness Test.  Their final physical fitness scores will be submitted to the state of Connecticut for review.  Students will leave PE 10 with greater skills and understanding of various activities introduced to encourage students to be active and become lifelong learners.  Students must pass PE 10 in order to take PE 11/12.  Required to graduate.

 Physical Education 11/12 - Level 3

Grade Level: 11, 12 / Credit: .5

Prerequisite:  PE 10

As part of a well planned and sequential physical education program, each student will have the opportunity to develop and maintain lifelong skills to live a healthy lifestyle.  PE 11/12 will expand upon the skills learned in PE 9 and PE 10 while introducing more complex aspects of physical activity such as strategy, cooperation, and decision making.  Based on the curriculum taught in PE 9 and PE 10, students in PE 11/12 will be afforded the opportunity to select the activities that best showcase their skills and competencies.  Passing one semester of PE 11/12 is required for graduation however students can also choose to take PE 11/12 as an elective after fulfilling their PE graduation requirement

Hero Course 11/12 - Level 3

Grade Level: 11, 12 / Credit: .5 

Prerequisite:  Students will be required to complete P.E. 9 and P.E. 10 prior to taking this course.  Also, students will need to have passed the 9th grade swimming assessment without the use of the personal floatation device. Students must also be 15 years of age prior to the completion of the course in order to earn lifeguard certification.


This course arms you with the knowledge and skills required to prevent and respond to any aquatic emergency in a facility or natural environment.

We outline the various duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard, including making decisions, having an efficient emergency action plan and knowing the legal obligations. Understand crucial elements to prevent drownings and injuries in and around the water. This course will also physically prepare students who are considering a profession as a first responder for the rigor of their fitness assessment.

Integrated Physical Education - Level  3

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 /Credit: .5

Prerequisite:   Approval by the PE Department, School Counselor and School Psychologist is required if you are interested in serving as a peer helper. This course can be taken as an additional elective for 9th and 10th graders (but cannot replace PE9 or PE10 courses).  This course MAY replace the PE 11 or 12 credit for graduation if approval is granted.


Integrated Physical Education class pairs students with disabilities and students with written modifications with age appropriate peer helpers and role models.  The emphasis is on socialization, teamwork and skill development, in a less competitive environment, to enhance physical activity and overall fitness.
