I embody the Metal of Esteem in so many ways and am super grateful to be considered for this honor. Character is something I take very seriously because there's so much negativity in this world I'm always looking for ways to brighten up the day of others or put a smile on someone's faces. Whenever I'm in a group I make sure to try and include everyone and push others to get out of their comfort zones, share their thoughts, and socialize with our peers. I know everybody is going through something so I make it a point to do the little things like smile at someone walking past me, complimenting others, or starting a short conversation with a random student. Respect is always huge and I think teachers and students all deserve it and should be able to feel heard.
Service is also a huge part of my life, although I haven't been at Piper all four years my old school made a huge emphasis on service and we had to have required hours to graduate. Through the years I have worked at many service projects included making care packages for those in need, sorting canned goods, and making cards for children who have to spend holidays in the hospital. I believe I am so blessed to be able to go to school and participate in sports because so many do not get that privilege, so if there is an opportunity to serve my community it is an event I do not like to pass up on. When I came to Piper my love for community service has stayed persistent and I have even invited my friends to serve with me at an event where we packaged shoeboxes full of toys for those who don't get to celebrate Christmas as much as they would like.
Throughout my four years I have had many achievements both academically and athletically. So far, all four of my years I have made the honor roll and continue to stay focused in my studies. This last year has been super important to me educationally and I have maintained a 4.0 ever since being back at Piper. This success in the classroom and on the basketball court has let me be able to accept an athletic scholarship offer from the number 1 public university in the country, Cal, Berkeley. Transitioning into the athletic side this year I surpassed 1000 career points, as well was named first team all conference, and 2nd team all state player of the year.
Coming into Piper I definitely looked for leadership opportunities, which was a bit challenging at first because all the clubs had already selected a board the prior year, so I was pretty much out of luck. This did not stop me though I am a member of FCA and I talked to some of the seniors involved and explained how I truly wanted to make a difference and be involved, so I ended up sharing my testimony during one of the meetings and continue to try and help out whenever I can. I was also selected with a group of kids to speak at the Baccalaureate for graduation which is a huge honor and something I take very seriously. I was also a captain for the basketball team and made it a point to make sure no matter what skill level your on or your upperclassmen or underclassmen, everyone can get better and have fun while doing it. It was a great experience being able to mentor some of the younger girls and give them advice based on experiences I have already had in my high school career and I have definitely made some meaningful connections. This position also helped strengthen my communication skills especially with having talks with coach and then communicating that information back to the team and making sure everyone stays accountable. Now, I am finishing my year off with track and I intend to continue my leadership qualities in encouraging some of the newer athletes and doing the small things like being a good example at meets and represent myself and our school in a positive light. The school year is almost over which is very bittersweet, but I'm so grateful for the people I have met and intend to end the year with the qualities of this award!Â
