Welcome!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week was full of highs and lows. We started out Monday with multiple fights. By Tuesday, our children had begun to settle down thanks to our parents' conversations and responses at home and our staff holding community meetings the next day. Wednesday we had a PHENOMENAL turnout at our Educational Resource Team and Back to School (K)Night. And we sadly ended Friday with an eighth grader pulling the fire alarm. We will continue to move forward remaining steadfast in our standards and putting out those who willfully refuse to uphold them.

Thank you, families for your continued partnership and support. This Tuesday, we will begin opening our weeks with classroom community meetings. Our children will have the opportunity to check-in and voice what's occupying their minds and also to review our community expectations and build positive relationships.

We are still working out bad habits and learning how to take care of each other and ensure everyone feels safe, feels seen, and is supported to be successful. SHOUT OUT to our sixth and seventh graders, who overall, collectively have worked to uphold our school community expectations. Sadly, if our eighth graders are not able to work collectively to influence those who come to fight and disrupt, our first afterschool dance, Harvest Festival Dance ,will only be for sixth and seventh grade students.

And as the school year is ramping up, I encourage you to take advantage of the September Self-Care activities so you can show up as your best self for our beloveds! Today's reminder is to avoid saying "I should..." and just relax and make time to do nothing.

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.

SY24 Title I District Parent & Family Engagement Policy
Title I District Parent & Family Engagement Policy SY 24 (Spanish).docx

We are a title i school, so what does that mean?

Title I is a federally funded program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as reauthorized by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

The purpose of Title I is to provide all children a significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education and to close educational achievement gaps.

The  restricted grant provides supplementary funding to improve the teaching and learning of students. Funds are to be used only for programs that supplement, and do not supplant, the services that would be provided in the absence of these funds.

All Title I schools benefit from centralized program services that include instructional support, professional development, technology support, and parent and family engagement initiatives.

Parent , Family and Community Engagement is very important and affects student achievement. Research shows that when a student’s parent or guardian is involved, the student is more successful in school.

Please read the ESSA & Title I Parent and Family Engagement Plan for helping and supporting schools in their efforts to encourage and promote parent engagement. The policy may be viewed in its entirety to your left or via the PGCPS website. Please sign the document to indicate that you have received this document.

Take care of your restrooms

Parents, continue to speak with our children about responsibly and hygienically using the restroom and reporting who is tearing up our community. What they do or don't do impacts everyone else.  Students are breaking up the soap dispensers, clogging the toilets and leaving used and unused sanitary napkins on the floor and sink. In this season of COVID, influenza, and other diseases, this behavior is going to end up spreading disease such as deadly staph infections and it's very likely your child is going to bring this to your home and family. And if your child is standing by watching and not reporting who is tearing up our community, then they are very much part of the problem.

The solution is not shutting down the bathrooms, because this is a school, they are human beings and we are not running a prison or concentration camp. The solution is for our children to responsibly use the restroom just as you have taught them and to be a guardian of our community.

Be sure to read this entire newsletter so you don't miss out on resources for you, your child, and your family.

We began the week acknowledging the heroes and spirit and strength exhibited during 9/11 and ended it ushering in Hispanic Heritage Month. We take this month, especially, to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of our students, staff and community members whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and Sout America.

And SHOUT OUT to our 8th Grade KNIGHTS who wrote letters and advocated for improved quality of our student dances! I heard you and am working hard to implement your suggestions!

We still have students missing their immunization (shot) records, dismissal plans, emergency contact information sheets, and publicity release forms. Please submit these documents immediately. National community schools coordinators week

This week we show our appreciation to our very own Community School Coordinator, Ms. Liticia Hubbard. Community Schools treat families not as beneficiaries of services, but as partners in building a better place for all to learn and live. Ms. Hubbard is the connection between students, families, school staff, and partners. She coordinates connections with district and community partners and facilitates collaboration in order to make our school and community a better place for all. We are grateful for her impact, hard work and efforts to support Thee G. James Gholson Middle students, families, and our community. Take some time this week to share your appreciation with Ms. Hubbard (Liticia.Hubbard@pgcps.org).

Welcome!

And how are the children?

Last week we enjoyed our first dance of the year! There were mixed reviews about the dj 😆. If your young knight did not meet the expectations and wasn't invited to the first dance, help them to reflect on how they can move forward with meeting our expectations, reaching out to staff for support and showing up as their best self. Invited students enjoyed themselves peacefully and upheld the KNIGHT expectations, so we look forward to doing more dances, afterschool. This means we will need our parent volunteers as chaperones and hosts/hostesses. Please read the information below on how to become a volunteer.

reading inventory this week!

This week we begin the Reading Inventory assessment. Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) uses a district-mandated Comprehension Reading Level Assessment with secondary students in Grades 6-8 to determine students’ strengths and needs in the area of Reading/English Language Arts. All students in middle school are mandated to participate in this Reading Inventory Assessment Administration. This assessment aims to identify students who may benefit from additional support with literacy and reading comprehension skills. Please read the letters below (in English, French and Spanish) to help your child do their best! Students will use their Chromebooks to take the test. Ensure each evening, your child plugs in their Chromebook so that it is charged and ready for the school day.

Welcome!

This is Us.

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. We welcomed 779 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders to school last week! And we celebrated our first week with a pep rally; check it out on our Twitter @gholson_knights. Parents, be sure to return the Emergency Contact Information sheet, Publicity Release form, to your child's MOD 1 teacher and to submit the digital Student Dismissal Plan (also in the sections below). We need these documents to ensure your child is safe, seen, and supported to be successful.

This week we will host a Back-to-School Dance- the second of many fun activities planned for our students. In order for students to be invited to such activities they must meet the following criteria-

Students who do not meet this criteria will not attend. Parents, ensure your students are in the correct grade level uniform, especially if they are repeating a grade (have been retained) and that students know their A-Day and B-Day schedules. Beginning this week, we will not accept students not knowing their schedule as an excuse for being late to class. Students who are persistently tardy to class will be excluded from Friday's Back-to-School Dance and future activities.

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Transportation

As we prepare for the upcoming 2023 - 2024 school year, PGCPS is approximately 135 bus drivers short of where we need to be. This will likely lead to some delays in transportation. PGCPS will continue to hold virtual bus driver job fairs every two weeks in an effort to close the gap. Additionally, please be mindful of the following items related to transportation:

Postcards - The postcards with students’ bus information for the 2023 - 2024 school year will be mailed out on Monday, August 14, 2023. They will be sent to the latest address provided to the school registrar in SchoolMax.

Stopfinder Bus App – Available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Parents/guardians must have an email address on file in School Max in order to be invited to view the students’ bus schedule. The Stopfinder invites for the 2023 - 2024 school year will be sent out weekly, beginning the week of Monday, August 14, 2023. Stopfinder Help/FAQs: https://stopfinder.com/help/

Infofinder – Parents may locate designated, comprehensive bus stops using this site by entering their home address. GJGMS Uniform Expectations

Gholson Knights take pride in their school and their appearance. Gholson is a MANDATORY UNIFORM SCHOOL. The uniform policy will be enforced for all students.  Each student must be dressed each day as follows:

Knight Tip:  Check Flynn O'Hara, All American Wear, Inc., Risse Brothers School Uniforms, Old Navy, Target, and Amazon for uniform deals. And purchase black cardigan sweaters while the season is hot/warm.

We need you!

This year we have field trips and other student activities planned that will require parent/guardian volunteers and chaperones. Please go to https://offices.pgcps.org/volunteer/cards/Become-a-Volunteer/ to complete the process. If you have previously completed the background screening process, please check with Ms. Perkins (Jada.Perkins@pgcps.org) to ensure your background screening confirmation document is on file at the school.

Also, we want to be prepared to continue instruction and school operation when staff take leave or if we have any remaining teaching vacancies. I encourage you to apply to be a Substitute Teacher at https://www.pgcps.org/offices/humanresources/substitute-teaching/how-to-apply Our young ones need you! We need you!
