Principal's Message
Welcome Undaunted Knights & Happy Thanksgiving! I'm grateful for the Gholson MS community and that I get to be a part of it!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Last week your child should have brought home their Quarter 1 Report Card. Be sure to review your child's progress with them. You are free to meet with teachers anytime by contacting your child's grade level professional school counselor - Dr. Doswell 6th [kelley.doswell@pgcps.org], Ms. Epps 7th [robbin.epps@pgcps.org], Ms. Jones 8th [jessica.hunterbass@pgcps.org] or (301) 883-8390. The parent Grade Appeal window closes December 7. If you want to appeal your student's Quarter 1 grade complete this form:
and submit it to your child's assistant principal- Mrs. Giles 8th [jamille.giles@pgcps.org], Mr. Isaac 7th, [sedrick.isaac@pgcps.org], or Mr. Joseph 6th [jereme.joseph@pgcps.org]. The deadline for parent appeal submissions is December 7.
This week we celebrate all of our students who made A, A & B Honor Roll quarter 1. I hope you are able to come and support them! I also invite you to the Virtual Parent Workshop: Healthy Living for Children, Teens & Families 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM, Tuesday, November 28 and to our English Language Development (ESOL) Parent Symposium 6 - 7:30 PM at Gholson and Basketball vs. Greenbelt @ 6PM on Wednesday, November 29. You may purchase tickets at TicketSpicket.com. Tickets will only be sold online; no tickets will be sold at the door. I apologize to all those who purchased a ticket but were unable to enter the first home game. If you have not received your refund, please contact Ms. McElroy (brooke.mcelroy@pgcps.org).
And we are accomplishing all these things with almost 20 vacancies (instructional staff and operational staff)! If you didn't know, WE NEED TEACHERS! Our children are missing 1 language arts teacher, 2 math teachers, 3 science teachers, 3 paraprofessionals, 5 special education teachers, 1 AVID teacher, 1 Health teacher, and 1 music teacher. How can you help our children get teachers?
Voice your concern to PGCPS leadership at http://apps.pgcps.org/pls/apex/f?p=370
Email this letter to PGCPS leadership at Cluseter 9 Instructional Director Dallas.Lee@pgcps.org and Associate Superintendent Amelia.Coleman@pgcps.org.
Volunteer at www.pgcps.org/volunteer or recruit long term substitutes.
Apply at www.pgcps.org/careers or recruit teachers.
Shadow your child or come in and check on them.
Many students say they are challenged by the PGCPS Dress Code and Gholson MS uniform because their uniform is dirty or their hair is undone or they need a haircut. Please work with your child to take care of their uniform and their hair. I look forward to seeing them in both their uniform top and uniform bottoms and neatly groomed hair no matter the style. Please note, that Gholson MS has a washer and dryer and we are happy to assist students with laundering their uniform. Discuss the PGCPS Dress Code with your child. Students who refuse to follow the PGCPS dress code will spend their day in the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) completing their work until they are willing to cooperate or parent/guardian can bring appropriate clothing.
A wise man once posted, "If your criticism of your community outweighs your contribution towards your community. You are part of the problem." When we attempted to jumpstart our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO/PTA) to support our children. ONE parent came. And it has been disappointing to still hear people, especially members of OUR community, carrying on this inaccurate narrative that our children are out of control, fighting every day. Having taught in and led middle and k-8 schools in DC and Prince George's County for the past 20 years, I can tell you our middle schoolers don't have any more conflicts than any other comprehensive neighborhood school. Don't allow one biased newsreel that lacked all the information or social media sites to define who we are! The only difference between our children and others is that we have THEE smartest and savviest videographers and social media moguls and mavens! That's it! If the only time you've come into the building is to criticize and point out what's not going right and you've never shown up to witness our children learning, serving, thriving and being, then YOU are part of the problem! And I'd love to help you turn yourself around and join us at any one of our upcoming events and any time to pop in and visit and support your child and give us some help! Be a part of the solution! We are down two secretaries, so if you have an hour or two to volunteer, we could use your help.
One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to try out a new radio station or different tv show as we wrap up "New November."
Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!
This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.

Principal's Message
Welcome!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Thank you to all the parents and community members who were able to stop by and see our eighth graders live in action this past Wednesday! I appreciate you coming in and being part of the solution instead of joining the league of disengaged, nonparticipating haters. But haters make us greater and Gholson Knights will continue to press forward UNDAUNTED! Check the calendar for upcoming opportunities for you to support our community at the GJGMS Parent Leaders Club (we're jump starting our Parent Teacher Organization!) and PGCPS Family Institute (NOV 7), Science Night & State of the Union (NOV 16); and Men Make a Difference Day (NOV 20). And EACH and EVERY MONDAY (except holidays) we are here to support you 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Gholson's Parent Support Center.
Last week we bid adieu to Mr. Garrett and Ms. Saunders as they embark on a new chapter! We will miss them and are grateful for their impact at Gholson. Once a Knight, always a Knight!
This week we wrap up our content area Benchmark assessments. Continue to encourage our children to do their best and focus as these tests are used to determine what and how we teach them and if they will be eligible for advanced courses. We will end the week celebrating seventh graders who exceeded expectations with a GLOW party and our basketball teams at the MidKnight Madness Pep Rally and Dance (Harvest dance revisited).
Also, send in your socks for our sock drive. Let's bless others!
One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages all to change our normal routine today and notice how we feel. Happy New November!
Be sure to read and make note of all details.

parents, our children need you!
This year we have field trips and other student activities (field trips, dances, pep rallies, hallway parties, orientation, class parties, school tours, open houses, etc.) planned that REQUIRE parent/guardian volunteers and chaperones. Please go to https://offices.pgcps.org/volunteer/cards/Become-a-Volunteer/ to complete the process. If we don't have enough parents, we will have to cancel these activities. Reach out to Ms. Chase, Parent Engagement Assistant (301) 883-8390, Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org
Now, if you have some things in your background that make you hesitant or not want to complete the background check, recruit and get somebody else to invest in our children and be a chaperone or volunteer in your place. No excuses!
If you have previously completed the background screening process, please check with Ms. Perkins (Jada.Perkins@pgcps.org) to ensure your background screening confirmation document is on file at the school.
Also, we want to be prepared to continue instruction and school operation when staff take leave or if we have any remaining teaching vacancies. I encourage you to apply to be a Substitute Teacher at https://www.pgcps.org/offices/humanresources/substitute-teaching/how-to-apply Let me know when you've done this and I can support and push it through. Our young ones need you! We need you!

Principal's Message
Welcome!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Last week our eighth graders shined bright as they focused and completed the PSAT 8/9! Our Mathematics teachers showed us how to be life long learners as they attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in DC. While I canceled the Harvest dance due to students' poor decisions, I look forward to the MidKnight Madness dance November 9.
To all my children- Moisturize, comb, pick, and brush your hair; I'm not listening to any excuses. MONDAY begins our enforcement of PGCPS dress code policy of NO head gear unless it is a documented religious reason. Do not wear ski masks, skull caps, hats, or bonnets inside of the building. Click here -> PGCPS Dress Code
If we have 0 fights, I will allow students to wear costumes (no masks/hats/head gear) that fit with our PGCPS Dress Code on Tuesday, October 30. I will send a robo-call Monday night to confirm.
This week students must bring their charged Chromebooks every day and get a full night's rest so they can do their best on the Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science Benchmark tests. If your child doesn't have a Chromebook, reach out to Ms. Mitchell (Nikki.McElveen@pgcps.org) to coordinate getting a Chromebook. If you need support with this, reach out to Ms. Chase (Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org), parent engagement specialist.
Additionally, I look forward to seeing our community members at our 8th Grade Open House, Wednesday, November 1, 8:00 - 10:00 AM. Come see the learning live and how you can support our success. November 2nd, grab free groceries at our Family Food Market (4-5:45 PM) and then go to Flowers HS to learn about all of the PGCPS specialty high school programs. November 2nd we also kiss first quarter "Goodbye" and begin second quarter with 1/2 day asynchronous learning at home on November 3rd.
One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages all to plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to! Happy Optimistic October!
