Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Our children are blessed because of the men in their lives! Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers and father-figures who lead, nurture, teach, and love our beloved baby Knights!

Last week we closed out school year 2023-2024 with field day fun and National Junior Honor Society Induction! Check it out on Twitter @gholson_knights and throughout the knewsletter. Thank you for your support and I look forward to continuing to partner with you on behalf of our children in school year 2024-2025! I invite you to join me Sunday, June 23, 10:45 AM at First Baptist of Highland Park (6801 Sheriff Road, Landover, MD), to close out the year in praise and prayer.

The summer is a great opportunity to explore your child's interests and the DMV. If your child isn't enrolled in a camp or other activity, make time to ride the Metro and explore the free museums in DC and activities sponsored by PG Parks and the National Harbor. Include weekly visits to the Prince George's Memorial Libraries either in person or online. And children should capitalize on this time to serve their community and earn Student Service Learning hours. Wouldn't it be great to start the new school year off already having met the eight hour middle school service learning hours requirement? (Download the Student Service Learning Verification form here: English, Spanish, French)

Beginning June 24 through August 16, Gholson business office hours will be 9 - 3 PM. If you have questions, concerns, or needs, please come during that time. Please note, PGCPS schools will be unable to do registrations, enrollments, or withdrawals until June 22 due to the student information system transition. Registration, enrollment, and withdrawals will resume July 23.

This Joyful June let's find ways to look for what's good. Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to talk to others in a warm and friendly way "Joyful June."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we have overcome all obstacles SY 24 to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

This is our last week of school! Thank you to all parents, staff, students and community members for making this a memorable first year and school year '24 for me and our baby Knights! I appreciate your support of  Thee G. James Gholson Middle School! I'm pleased and proud of our children and our Gholson Community. UNDAUNTED, we faced and overcame many obstacles this year. Here are just some of our wins-

AND THIS ISN'T EVEN half of our WINS this year!

Last week we welcomed rising sixth graders; students played games at Main Event; seventh graders learned how to manage their finances; sailed the Inner Harbor; eighth graders danced out of their shoes; celebrated our parent volunteers, scholar-athletes, and all the eighth graders who UNDAUNTEDLY excelled in their academics, service, and citizenship. As Assistant Principal Giles passionately shared at the 8th Grade Awards program, "We are raising the standard at Thee G. James Gholson!" We don't celebrate "E"s, we celebrate UNDAUNTED EXCELLENCE! Check out all we got into on Twitter @gholson_knights.

Remember Fourth Quarter and the 2024 school year end Thursday, June 13.  Be mindful that June 12 and June 13 are 3-hour early dismissal days. Be sure you make adjustments to ensure you pick up your child at 11:15 AM, if they are a car rider. Also, all students should have returned their PGCPS-issued Chromebooks by now. If not returned, students will receive a fine up to $200. Beginning June 24 through August 16, Gholson registration, enrollment, etc. office hours will be 9 - 3 PM.

ICYMI, Prince Geroge's County Public Schools is moving to Synergy Student Information System. Synergy will replace SchoolMAX. Please make sure all your contact information is up to date and that you've completed the Transportation survey here:

Thank you to our parents and families who heeded my call and spoke with their child about their use of profanity and respect. Please continue to encourage our children to represent you well and show their best selves!

And we will continue to  push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push Positivity at THEE G" by-

The weather is warming and we know off-task and negative behaviors tend to rise during warmer seasons. At Gholson, we will continue to enforce our high expectations of our Knights. Remember, my expectation is that all students will arrive to class on time every time. Please know we don't accept any excuses for students not being in their assigned location on time; for students being in the hallways without a written pass. Our children are old enough and intelligent enough to know their daily schedule; to follow verbal and written directions; and to procure written permission (pass) to exit class during class time. To accept any excuse, discounts their abilities and intelligence and is disrespectful to them. We are conducting hallsweeps every MOD every day to support students in arriving to class on time. Students who are caught more than once in the hallsweeps will face increasing disciplinary actions and exclusion from field trips and incentive activities for trespassing, loitering, and refusal to follow reasonable staff directions.

Parents please join us and help us to redirect and curb any students who come to 900 Nalley Road and try to do what they want, disrupt learning, and put the safety of everyone at risk.  We cannot allow students who choose to do actions that make it unsafe and disrupt the learning and teaching of everyone to be at 900 Nalley Road without their parent/guardian. Either children will be at home with their parent/guardian or they will be in school with their parent/guardian. Thank you to the parents and caregivers that have already come and shadowed their children! We see the difference your influence has made.

Work with us in ensuring Gholson MS is safe, seen, and supported by-

Remember, in order for students to be invited to field trips, incentive activities (dances, pep rallies, 8th Grade Dance, 8th Grade Class Trip, 8th Grade Awards, etc.) they must meet the following criteria-

Students who do not meet all of these criteria will not attend or participate.

And to those who have negative opinions about Gholson MS, I ask "What is your most recent step you've personally taken to improve Gholson MS and our children's experience?" And "What is the evidence of the impact of your actions?" If you are struggling to answer these questions, I invite you to -

Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Only when students meet our expectations and abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety, learning, and the orderliness of school operations.

This Joyful June let's find ways to look for what's good. Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to bring joy to others by doing something kind for them "Joyful June."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Action Required: Verify Contact Details and Transportation Choice for Next School Year

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) needs your help to gather updated contact information and transportation preferences for your child(ren) for the 2024-2025 school year. This is essential as we transition to our new Student Information System, Synergy.

Reasons you might choose to opt-out of bus transportation include: you plan to make other arrangements to have your child dropped off/picked up from school; your child will walk to and from school; your child will drive to and from school.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 14. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Your participation is critical for accurate planning and a smooth transition to Synergy.

Turn in chromebooks by june 3

Thee G. James Gholson is moving into a school-based program for student devices beginning with the school year 2024-2025 and we began collecting Chromebooks back in April. The school-based program means that students will no longer be assigned a device that travels with them from home to school and back. Their Chromebooks will be placed in a cart or a secure location for use during the instructional day in the classroom.

Even though our school will be school-based for student devices in the upcoming year, if you choose, your child can be assigned a device to take home with them after signing the Student Device Usage Agreement.

Please help prepare for our school-based program by completing the following:

If your child needs a PGCPS-issued device for a PGCPS summer program, then the summer program will provide you information on receiving a Chromebook.  In-person summer programs will provide devices for students to use during the instructional day.  Students in virtual summer programs will be able to check a device out from their base school and return it at the end of the program.  Please be advised that students will continue to be responsible for damage caused by negligence, loss, and/or stolen devices as outlined in the Student Device Usage Agreement and any associated fees incurred while the device is assigned to your student.

Thank you for your continued support of our student device program in Prince George’s County Public Schools.

If you have any questions, please contact our school (301) 883-8390.

Vote to change Gholson to a voluntary uniform policy

Currently Gholson Middle is a MANDATORY uniform school. Enforcing the mandatory uniform policy takes time and energy from instruction , students, and parents. Enforcing a school uniform policy diverts time and energy away from learning, as staff spends time ensuring students comply with the policy. When students come out of uniform, staff must discipline them, call parents, parents must take time to come bring uniforms, and students lose class time waiting for them in In-school suspension. Furthermore, the mandatory uniform policy unfairly burdens families with limited financial resources and families without an in-home washing machine and clothes dryer. While uniforms are meant to level the playing field, they can sometimes highlight socio-economic differences. If students' uniforms are not well-maintained, they can draw attention to a student's financial situation and lead to bullying and fights. Additionally, the uniforms have not shown a significant positive effect on our students' achievement as promised.

We need your vote to change Gholson to a VOLUNTARY uniform school. This would allow families to choose whether their child wears a uniform or not according to their families' needs. In addition, children will no longer be penalized or disciplined for not being in uniform. Without mandatory uniforms, the focus can be more on academics and student achievement. Also, allowing students the option to choose what they wear helps them express their individuality and personal style. This can lead to increased confidence and a stronger sense of identity and student achievement.

Holler if you hear ME!

Communication is the best way to know how the children are! PGCPS and Thee G. James Gholson Middle School have employed a few tools (SchoolMAX, Knight Newsletter, SchoolMessenger) to enable two-way communication between school and families. Teachers post attendance, assignment grades and comments via SchoolMAX. This is the primary tool to stay informed of your child's attendance, grades, and progress. It is PGCPS' and my expectation that parents will regularly check (at least once a week) their children's grades in SchoolMAX and intervene. Best practice- Log into SchoolMAX with your child and have them review their attendance, assignment and course grades with you on Wednesdays of each week. This midweek check gives children time to ask their teachers questions and make any needed corrections. If you have questions or concerns as you are reviewing your child's grades, email your child's teacher or reach out to their professional school counselor to schedule a parent/teacher conference.

Remember, PGCPS and Gholson MS primarily communicate via SchoolMessenger. Click the Family Portal SchoolMAX hyperlink to make sure your phone, text, and email are connected so you don't miss important messages from PGCPS and Gholson. Check on your friends and family with children at Gholson MS to make sure they are connected too. It's important to ensure your desired contact information is correct before SchoolMAX switches to Synergy in late June.

Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

We are one week closer to summer break! As things are winding down, parents don't let up on communicating with staff, monitoring your child's social media, text messages, and grades! FINISH STRONG! Fourth Quarter ends June 13, be mindful that June 12 and June 13 are 3 hour early dismissal days. Be sure you make adjustments to ensure you pick up your child at 11:15 PM, if they are a car rider. Tomorrow, June 3, is the last day students should return their PGCPS-issued Chromebooks. Also, I invite all rising sixth and seventh graders (SY 25), to come to Gholson at 6:00 PM for the Rising 6th and 7th Grade Parent Night. At this time, parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about Thee G. James Gholson MS and how they can support their child in being successful.

June 1 marked the first day of Pride month. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, cookouts, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

Check out Twitter @gholson_Knights to see pictures of all that we got into last week! This week students continue to take the PGCPS Benchmark 3 to measure their progress in RELA, Math, and Social Studies and seventh graders will get a taste of being an adult and managing their finances in real life via the Junior Achievement Finance Field Trip. And Honor Roll awardees will embark on a fun field trip to Main Event.

Benchmark 3 Assessments begin May 28!

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is pleased to inform you that your child will be taking the district’s Optional Benchmark 3 Assessments. The purpose of these assessments is to measure what your child learned during the semester. The data gained from the Benchmarks supports teachers with identifying instructional strategies and resources to meet the needs of each student.

The Benchmark 3 Assessments will take place beginning on May 28th and will go through June 7th. PGCPS will be using the PGCPS Pearson TestNav platform to administer the Benchmark 3 Assessments. No grades will be assigned based on these assessment results. The results of the Benchmark Assessments will be used by teachers and schools to enhance instruction on skills your child is learning in the classroom.

The assessments will cover three major content areas of Mathematics, Reading/English/Language Arts (RELA) and Social Studies. The Mathematics Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grades K-8, and select high school courses. The RELA  Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grades 3 through 10. The Social Studies Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grade 8.

Following the Benchmark 3 test administration, parents and families have the ability to access completed Benchmark individual student reports for students via the PGCPS Pearson Access Parent Portal. If a parent or family had an active email address on file with PGCPS as of November 16, 2023, they should have received an email from the following email address: noreply@mdassessments.com. The email contained an invitation for parents and families to access the PGCPS Pearson Access Parent Portal to view your child’s Benchmark reports. Parents and families are encouraged to check their Spam folder in their email account, if the email does show up in your inbox.

Please note that only fully completed Benchmark scores are available after each test administration for the 2023-2024 school year. The PGCPS Parent Portal will only contain Benchmark scores after each test administration and access is only available during the school year.

If you have questions about the testing schedule or Benchmark Assessments, please contact Mrs. Kirk, Testing Coordinator, (301) 883-8390.

Close Up Civic Leaders: Free Week-Long Summer Program for PGCPS Students!

Created in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), the Close Up Foundation presents Civic Leaders for rising eighth-graders and rising 10th-graders. The Civic Leaders program provides exciting opportunities for students to develop their civics knowledge and political efficacy, practice critical skills, and meet Maryland College and Career Ready (MCCR) Standards.

Students will discuss the issues they care about and follow a curriculum that emphasizes building citizenship skills and democratic dispositions. Close Up instructors will facilitate the program to help middle and high school students engage with their community and take part in persuasive speaking activities about pressing current issues. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in site visits throughout Washington, D.C.

This is a free program offered to PGCPS students, but space is limited. There are only 150 spots open for each program. Visit the Close Up website (www.closeup.org/pgcps) for more information!
