Welcome!
And how are the children? This is the traditional greeting that is passed between Masai warriors: "Kasserian Ingera," one would always say to another. The Masai are the most accomplished and fabled tribes of Africa, and no tribe was considered to have warriors more fearsome or more intelligent than the mighty Masai. “And how are the children?” acknowledges the high value that the Masai always place on their children's well-being. Even warriors with no children of their own would always give the traditional answer, "All the children are well." Meaning, of course, that peace and safety prevail, that the priorities of protecting the young, the powerless, are in place. That Masai society has not forgotten its reason for being, its proper functions and responsibilities. "All the children are well" means that life is good. It means that the daily struggles for existence do not preclude proper caring for their young (P. O'Neill, 2017).
Every adult among us, parent and non-parent alike, must feel an equal weight for the daily care and protection of all the children in our community. We must each work every day to make sure our children feel safe, seen, and are supported to be successful. In this way, we can truly say without any hesitation, "The children are well, yes, all the children are well."
During Pre-Service week last week, Gholson staff and educators set their intentions for this year and committed to work towards manifesting them. Parents, take a moment to set your intentions for this year. Grab some time with your children this week and also set intentions. And all of us will work towards manifesting them.
This year I call on all of us to-
Set good intentions. Be kind. Share grace.
When we, together, each and every one, do this, we will always be able to answer resoundingly, “Yes, the children are well!”
This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.
Welcome back!
🎒 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL NEED-TO-KNOW! 🎒
In order to make sure every Knight feels safe, seen, and are supported to be successful-
Check your personal e-mail and read the Student Welcome Back letter.

THERE WILL BE LOTS OF PEDESTRIANS, VISITORS, and TRAFFIC! Pack your patience and flexibility; and follow all directions of Gholson staff as there will be many of us and we will all be filled with joy and excitement.
Drivers of car-riders must drive all the way down to the end of the building. Drivers must remain in their car and students must be ready to exit the vehicle as soon as it comes to a safe stop.
If you wish for a longer goodbye, please park on the hill in designated parking spots and walk your young Knight down to the building.
The Washington Commanders, Towson University, University of Maryland, and other community partners will be at Gholson MS to cheer on students as they enter the building and to give out prizes to students and parents/guardians.
Parents may enter the building and wish students well from Scholars' Circle. Prepare for a brief greeting, hug/kiss, and drop off. Staff is positioned around the building to direct our young Knights to their destination.
Most important: Smile. Be Kind. Share Grace.
