Quarter 2 Progress Report Grades are available on SchoolMAX. How is your child doing so far?

Principal's Message

Welcome Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week Quarter 2 Progress Report grades were released online via SchoolMAX. We celebrated our student mentees of the SKIRTS program, Metro Transit Mentoring program and our Family Food Market volunteers. We also celebrated the successes and challenges of first quarter at our Virtual State of Gholson Community Meeting; thank you to all of you who were able to join us!  We basked in the glory of the boys' basketball team win over Pullen; held our heads up through the girls' team's only loss this season; both teams went on to dominate Dora Kennedy French Immersion School on the road and our students and staff showed off our creativity during spirit week. We closed the week in fun jingling at the Jingle Jam Winter Homecoming dance. And this quarter we celebrated and welcomed the births of sons to our staff members Mr. Harris, Ms. Wilson, and Mr. Sims. The Knight community is growing!

This week ELD students continue to complete the Speaking and Writing tasks. I look forward to seeing all of our parents at the virtual Parent Leaders Club Wednesday, December 20 at 6:00 PM and I hope to see select parents at the  Mandatory Parent Meeting for Students who earned below a 2.0 Quarter 1 Tuesday, December 19 at 5:30 PM in our library! This is your opportunity to come together and use the collective strength of your voice and influence to make things better for our children at Gholson MS. Please reach out to Ms. Chase (Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org) for questions or more information about the Parent Leaders Club and your child's professional school counselor for questions or more information about the Mandatory Parent Meeting. Additionally, I invite our current Knight families to come in your comfiest pajamas, blankets and bring your snacks as we have movie (K)night at Gholson Thursday, December 21.

Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Remind them to keep our facilities clean and beautiful and to remain in their classroom until they are called during dismissal. Only when students abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety and the orderliness of school operations.

THANK YOU to those of you who have emailed and called the Area Office and voiced your concerns about the vacancies! Keep the pressure coming! Undaunted, we are accomplishing all these things with almost 20 vacancies (instructional staff and operational staff)! If you didn't know, WE NEED TEACHERS! Our children are missing 1 language arts teacher, 2 math teachers, 3 science teachers, 3 paraprofessionals, 5 special education teachers, 1 AVID teacher, 1 Health teacher, and 1 music teacher. How can you help our children get teachers?

One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to give thanks and list the kind things others have done for you. Continue to do good in this "Do Good December."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.

This year we have field trips and other student activities (field trips, dances, pep rallies, hallway parties, orientation, class parties, school tours, open houses, etc.) planned that REQUIRE parent/guardian volunteers and chaperones. Please go to https://offices.pgcps.org/volunteer/cards/Become-a-Volunteer/ to complete the process. If we don't have enough parents, we will have to cancel these activities. Reach out to Ms. Chase, Parent Engagement Assistant (301) 883-8390, Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org

Now, if you have some things in your background that make you hesitant or not want to complete the background check, recruit and get somebody else to invest in our children and be a chaperone or volunteer in your place. No excuses!

If you have previously completed the background screening process, please check with Ms. Perkins (Jada.Perkins@pgcps.org) to ensure your background screening confirmation document is on file at the school.

Also, we want to be prepared to continue instruction and school operation when staff take leave or if we have any remaining teaching vacancies. I encourage you to apply to be a Substitute Teacher at https://www.pgcps.org/offices/humanresources/substitute-teaching/how-to-apply Let me know when you've done this and I can support and push it through. Principal's Message

Welcome Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week our students in the English Language Development program demonstrated their progress on the ELD writing and speaking tasks; our basketball teams were victoriouus over Legends Public Charter and William Wirt Middle Schools; parents engaged and learned of tools they can use to help our children be successful at the State of Gholson community meeting and Scholastic Literacy night; hundreds of families were able to fill their refrigerators and pantries thanks to our Family Food Market; and all 728 of our students were able to take home free books!

This week ELD students continue to complete the Speaking and Writing tasks; we will celebrate our eighth grade ballers at their last home game and hand an "L" Thomas Pullen; publish Quarter 2 progress report grades (DEC 14); see you at the Virtual Family Connections Parent Workshop; and dance the night away at Friday's homecoming dance.

Undaunted, we are accomplishing all these things with almost 20 vacancies (instructional staff and operational staff)! If you didn't know, WE NEED TEACHERS! Principal's Message

Welcome Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week we were plagued with unsubstantiated threats of violence. Parents, please have a serious discussion with your child about the negative impact of rumors and false reporting of threats and weapons. As we take any mention of violence or threat seriously, we have poured multiple community and school resources into these investigations and taken away from instructional time. Each time a false report is made it diminishes the seriousness of the situation and the credibility of THEE G. James Gholson Middle School. Be vigilant, but also be sure your source of information is a primary source/firsthand and can be trusted!

This week finds us busy once again! Students in the English Language Development program (formally ESOL) will begin their Speaking & Writing tasks to demonstrate their growing English proficiency. Our basketball teams look forward to handing Legends Charter School and William Wirt Middle School some Ls. NOTE THE NEW POLICY: All children (15 and under) must have a parent/guardian accompany them to enter the game. NO Exceptions! Children and their parent/guardian will need a ticket.

Teachers will begin submitting Quarter 2 Progress Report grades (check your student's grades in SchoolMAX). And I invite parents and the community to join me Tuesday, December 5, virtually, to hear about what's happening at Gholson MS and to Gholson MS; Wednesday, December 6 in our media center for Literacy Night where you and your child can get free materials to help them be better readers, writers, and speakers; and Thursday, December 7 for our Family Food Market. After you've grabbed your groceries, pop online for the PGCPS Family Institute Session: Keeping Our Kids Safe.

General James Gholson

On this day, December 3rd in 2006, our namesake General James Gholson passed away. His life is a testament to excellence, resistance, and determination. He served as the first principal of Fairmont High School, one of two high schools for African-Americans in segregated Prince George's County Public Schools for 17 years and as Assistant Superintendent of Northern Area. He is nationally known for being the architect and engineer of desegregation of PGCPS that has been replicated across the nation! Because of him, we are able to attend quality schools no matter our skin color, heritage, or zipcode. It is in his honor, we live, serve, lead, learn, and instruct! Let us make him proud!

National family engagement month Honors

During National Family Engagement Month we celebrate Ms. Chavonne Chase, our Parent Engagement Assistant, for creating open and welcoming environments for our Knight families. She keeps families informed, connected, & engaged! You'll find Ms. Chase welcoming students and families in Scholar Circle, covering the main office (as we look to hire secretaries), supporting parents at our Monday evening Parent Support Center, crafting and leading parent workshops and filling in wherever else she sees a need. We are grateful for her impact, hard work and efforts to support Thee G. James Gholson Middle students, families, and our community. Take some time this week to share your appreciation with Ms. Chase (Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org).
