Principal's Message
Greetings Undaunted Knights!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Thank you parents and staff for your support! Looking at our attendance and discipline data you can see our Knights are on the right track and that is only because of your partnership! I appreciate your support of our children and THEE G. James Gholson Middle School! We are UNDAUNTED! Join me Tuesday, February 13 for our virtual community-wide meeting celebrating our wins and making plans to overcome our obstacles.
Last week we entered QUARTER 3 and the second half of the year! Teachers submitted report card grades. You will be able to see them online via SchoolMAX beginning January 30 and students will bring you home a copy February 9. We continued administering the ACCESS and Benchmark assessments. Additionally, eligible students enjoyed a mini yard show presented by the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. These are both traditionally and historically Black and Latino organizations respectively. Three new afterschool opportunities (Inner Beauty, Collage & Animation, and Music Production) began. Students and families braved the cold weather to watch "Snow Day" at Family Movie Night. And this weekend our Gholson Cheerleaders brought home FIRST place from their first cheer competition of the season!
This week students will be motivated by Mr. Taylor, who will speak to them about depression, academic success, trauma and how to create a legacy. And they will get to tour the School Club Fair to get an opportunity to join extracurricular clubs at Gholson. The Parent Support Center will be open this Monday at Gholson 5 PM and the Family Food Market will be open Thursday at 3:30 PM.
Our students will continue taking the RELA and Math Benchmark 2 assessments, so it's important they bring their charged Chromebook and charger to school each day. If you're having difficulties with your Chromebook/it's been lost or stolen, email Mrs. Mitchell (Nikki.McElveen@pgcps.org).
Many thanks to all the parents and students who have sent letters to the Board of Education, Maryland Senate, Area 2 Office and Superintendent House asking for help with our, now, 18 vacancies! Please keep writing and helping me to advocate so our babies get the best that they deserve. I also invite all parents to join us for the next Parent Leaders Club. This is an opportunity to voice your concerns and take action with other parents to make Gholson a place where your child is safe, seen, and supported to be successful.
We will continue to push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push P(ositivity) at THEE G" by-
being PREPARED- wearing their complete uniform, no skimasks or hats; having their Chromebook, pens/pencils, notebook; arriving to school and classes on time
being UPLIFTING- assisting classmates and staff; positively encouraging classmates; sharing with classmates
being SAFE- following all instructions and directions of all Gholson staff members; following all school procedures and routines; keeping hands/bodies and objects to theirselves; reporting unsafe, inappropriate, or unusual goings-ons to adults
being HELPFUL- cleaning up after theirselves; keeping our school clean and free of graffitti; reporting any concerns or needs to adults immediately
Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Only when students meet our expectations and abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety, learning, and the orderliness of school operations.
One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to ask other people about things they've enjoyed recently in this "Happier January."
Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!
This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.

Principal's Message
Greetings Undaunted Knights!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Last week ended Quarter 2 (January 19)! Check your child's assignments and grades in SchoolMAX. Reach out to Ms. Chase, Parent Engagement Assistant, at (301) 883-8390 or Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org if you need help with SchoolMAX. Our children will continue to demonstrate their proficiency on the Science and Social Studies Benchmark 2 assessments. Click on the links below to find ways you can help your child do his/her/their best. Gholson welcomed the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated chapters- Iota Gamma Omega and Psi Epsilon Omega on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as they hosted a day of service. I was excited to see many students took the opportunity to earn at least three (3) service learning hours towards their 8 hour (for middle schoolers) and 24 hour (for high schoolers) MD state graduation requirement goals. Remember: All eighth graders must submit their service learning documentation by May 31, 2024 in order to participate in any 8th Grade End of the Year activities.
Remember, Monday January 22, the building is closed to students and students will work from home. Teachers will upload all assignments and attendance check-ins to their Canvas page by 7:45 AM. Students can access all Canvas pages via PGCPS Clever. In order to receive credit for their attendance, students must complete and submit all assignments by 11:59 PM January 22nd. If you or your child are having difficulties, be sure to email your child's teacher immediately. Don't wait or it'll be too late! This will be the first assignment of QUARTER 3! Make sure your child is able to capture this first "A" of the quarter!
This week also begins our newest afterschool enrichment opportunities for our children. Email Ms. Hubbard (Liticia.Hubbard@pgcps.org) to register your child for the Inner Beauty, Collage & Animation, and Music Production after school clubs. Our students will begin taking the RELA and Math Benchmark 2 assessments, so it's important they bring their charged Chromebook and charger to school each day. If you're having difficulties with your Chromebook/it's been lost or stolen, email Mrs. Mitchell (Nikki.McElveen@pgcps.org). Additionally, students who have met the PBIS criteria quarter 2 will be invited to our incentive activity Friday. The criteria-
Arrive to class prepared before the bell
No PS-74 or minor incident form/ suspensions (ISS/OSS) [incl. cutting class, loitering, absconding, etc.]
No uniform violations as documented on PS-74/minor incident form
No grade less than 70%
And I hope our children and families will join me this Thursday, January 25 at 6:30 PM as we watch the movie "Snow Day"!
Many thanks to all the parents who have sent letters to the Area 2 Office and Superintendent House asking for help with our, now, 18 vacancies! Greetings Undaunted Knights!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
Last week we welcomed the Gholson community back to the building. This week students will take the Reading Inventory to measure their reading ability and progress. Read through the Google Slides on the left with your child to prepare them to take the Reading Inventory. Make sure your child has an operating Chromebook and charge it nightly and that they get adequate rest. If you have any questions about the Reading Inventory, ask your child's Language Arts (RELA) teacher or Ms. Lovett (Chantel.Lovett@pgcps.org) at (301) 883-8390.
The end of Quarter 2 is quickly approaching (January 19)! Check your child's assignments and grades in SchoolMAX. The last day for teachers to accept any make-up work or late work (optional) is January 12.
We will continue to push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push P(ositivity) at THEE G" by-

The Grinch surprised students the last day before Christmas Break!
There's POWER in the PAUSE!
Pause today to reflect, release and recharge before you start the new year!
What do you intend to do and accomplish these new 365 days?
William Henley's poem reminds us of the spirit of Gholson MS - UNDAUNTED!
Principal's Message
Happy New Year Undaunted Knights!
I pray this Winter/Christmas Break filled your need for rest, peace, and joy and this new year brings you continued joy, peace, health, and wealth!
And how are the children? How would you answer this question?
I look forward to opening the building tomorrow (JAN 3) and welcoming our children back! As we do every first school day of each week, we will operate on a modified schedule and conduct community meetings. Children will spend the first hour of their day meeting as a grade level community to welcome them back; reconnect with each other and staff; decompress from the break; and re-acclimate to our expectations and routines.
It is my expectation that our children will "push P(ositivity) at THEE G" by-
being prepared - wearing their complete uniform, no skimasks or hats; having their Chromebook, pens/pencils, notebook; arriving to school and classes on time
being uplifting - assisting classmates and staff; positively encouraging classmates; sharing with classmates
being safe- following all instructions and directions of all Gholson staff members; following all school procedures and routines; keeping hands/bodies and objects to theirselves; reporting unsafe, inappropriate, or unusual goings-ons to adults
being helpful- cleaning up after theirselves; keeping our school clean and free of graffitti; reporting any concerns or needs to adults immediately
Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Only when students meet our expectations and abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety, learning, and the orderliness of school operations.
One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to make time today to do something kind for ourselves. How about some self-care and taking a moment to pause, reflect, release, and recharge? Use our Gholson 3R sheet above to be kind to yourself in this "Happier January."
