Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Somewhere along the way, Memorial Day became known as the unofficial start to summer (and the last stretch of school before summer vacation!). But there’s so much more to this holiday than cookouts and crossing one more day off the school calendar. Each May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day to remember and honor military men and women who died while serving in the nation's armed forces. This differs from Veterans Day, which is celebrated in November. Veterans Day honors everyone who served in the U.S. military.

From 1868 through 1970, Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 each year. Since then, the official national Memorial Day holiday is traditionally celebrated on the last Monday in May. On May 5, 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — an organization of former Union soldiers and sailors established Decoration Day. It was meant to be a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The cemetery already held the remains of 20,000 Union dead and several hundred dead from the Confederacy, which fought to keep slavery. Memorial Day began as a tribute to Civil War dead. However, it was not until after World War I that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars.

Check out Twitter @gholson_Knights to see pictures of all that we got into last week! This week students begin to take the PGCPS Benchmark 3 to measure their progress in RELA, Math, and Social Studies. Eligible students will get to dress down during MCAP Spirit week to celebrate their focus and efforts in completing all of their MCAPs. Additionally, eligible eighth graders and student mentors will embark on field trips.

Thank you to our parents and families who heeded my call and spoke with their child about their use of profanity and respect. Please continue to encourage our children to represent you well and show their best selves!

Thee G. James Gholson is moving into a school-based program for student devices beginning with the school year 2024-2025. The school-based program means that students will no longer be assigned a device that travels with them from home to school and back. Their Chromebooks will be placed in a cart or a secure location for use during the instructional day in the classroom. Even though our school will be school-based for student devices in the upcoming year, if you choose, your child can be assigned a device to take home with them after signing the Student Device Usage Agreement.

Please help prepare for our school-based program by completing the following:

And we will continue to  push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push Positivity at THEE G" by-

The weather is warming and we know off-task and negative behaviors tend to rise during warmer seasons. At Gholson, we will continue to enforce our high expectations of our Knights. Remember, my expectation is that all students will arrive to class on time every time. Please know we don't accept any excuses for students not being in their assigned location on time; for students being in the hallways without a written pass. Our children are old enough and intelligent enough to know their daily schedule; to follow verbal and written directions; and to procure written permission (pass) to exit class during class time. To accept any excuse, discounts their abilities and intelligence and is disrespectful to them. We are conducting hallsweeps every MOD every day to support students in arriving to class on time. Students who are caught more than once in the hallsweeps will face increasing disciplinary actions and exclusion from field trips and incentive activities for trespassing, loitering, and refusal to follow reasonable staff directions.

Parents please join us and help us to redirect and curb any students who come to 900 Nalley Road and try to do what they want, disrupt learning, and put the safety of everyone at risk.  We cannot allow students who choose to do actions that make it unsafe and disrupt the learning and teaching of everyone to be at 900 Nalley Road without their parent/guardian. Either children will be at home with their parent/guardian or they will be in school with their parent/guardian. Thank you to the parents and caregivers that have already come and shadowed their children! We see the difference your influence has made.

Work with us in ensuring Gholson MS is safe, seen, and supported by-

Remember, in order for students to be invited to field trips, incentive activities (dances, pep rallies, 8th Grade Dance, 8th Grade Class Trip, 8th Grade Awards, etc.) they must meet the following criteria-

Students who do not meet all of these criteria will not attend or participate.

And to those who have negative opinions about Gholson MS, I ask "What is your most recent step you've personally taken to improve Gholson MS and our children's experience?" And "What is the evidence of the impact of your actions?" If you are struggling to answer these questions, I invite you to -

Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Only when students meet our expectations and abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety, learning, and the orderliness of school operations.

This Meaningful May let's find ways to be a part of something bigger. Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to focus on how our actions make a difference for others this "Meaningful May."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Turn in chromebooks by june 3

Thee G. James Gholson is moving into a school-based program for student devices beginning with the school year 2024-2025 and we began collecting Chromebooks back in April.

If your child needs a PGCPS-issued device for a PGCPS summer program, then the summer program will provide you information on receiving a Chromebook.  In-person summer programs will provide devices for students to use during the instructional day.  Students in virtual summer programs will be able to check a device out from their base school and return it at the end of the program.  Please be advised that students will continue to be responsible for damage caused by negligence, loss, and/or stolen devices as outlined in the Student Device Usage Agreement and any associated fees incurred while the device is assigned to your student.

Thank you for your continued support of our student device program in Prince George’s County Public Schools.

If you have any questions, please contact our school (301) 883-8390.

Benchmark 3 Assessments begin May 28!

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is pleased to inform you that your child will be taking the district’s Optional Benchmark 3 Assessments. The purpose of these assessments is to measure what your child learned during the semester. The data gained from the Benchmarks supports teachers with identifying instructional strategies and resources to meet the needs of each student.

The Benchmark 3 Assessments will take place beginning on May 28th and will go through June 7th. PGCPS will be using the PGCPS Pearson TestNav platform to administer the Benchmark 3 Assessments. No grades will be assigned based on these assessment results. The results of the Benchmark Assessments will be used by teachers and schools to enhance instruction on skills your child is learning in the classroom.

The assessments will cover three major content areas of Mathematics, Reading/English/Language Arts (RELA) and Social Studies. The Mathematics Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grades K-8, and select high school courses. The RELA  Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grades 3 through 10. The Social Studies Benchmark assessments will be administered to students in grade 8.

Following the Benchmark 3 test administration, parents and families have the ability to access completed Benchmark individual student reports for students via the PGCPS Pearson Access Parent Portal. If a parent or family had an active email address on file with PGCPS as of November 16, 2023, they should have received an email from the following email address: noreply@mdassessments.com. The email contained an invitation for parents and families to access the PGCPS Pearson Access Parent Portal to view your child’s Benchmark reports. Parents and families are encouraged to check their Spam folder in their email account, if the email does show up in your inbox.

Please note that only fully completed Benchmark scores are available after each test administration for the 2023-2024 school year. The PGCPS Parent Portal will only contain Benchmark scores after each test administration and access is only available during the school year.

If you have questions about the testing schedule or Benchmark Assessments, please contact Mrs. Kirk, Testing Coordinator, (301) 883-8390.

Vote to change Gholson to a voluntary uniform policy

Currently Gholson Middle is a MANDATORY uniform school. Enforcing the mandatory uniform policy takes time and energy from instruction , students, and parents. Enforcing a school uniform policy diverts time and energy away from learning, as staff spends time ensuring students comply with the policy. When students come out of uniform, staff must discipline them, call parents, parents must take time to come bring uniforms, and students lose class time waiting for them in In-school suspension. Furthermore, the mandatory uniform policy unfairly burdens families with limited financial resources and families without an in-home washing machine and clothes dryer. While uniforms are meant to level the playing field, they can sometimes highlight socio-economic differences. If students' uniforms are not well-maintained, they can draw attention to a student's financial situation and lead to bullying and fights. Additionally, the uniforms have not shown a significant positive effect on our students' achievement as promised.

We need your vote to change Gholson to a VOLUNTARY uniform school. This would allow families to choose whether their child wears a uniform or not according to their families' needs. In addition, children will no longer be penalized or disciplined for not being in uniform. Without mandatory uniforms, the focus can be more on academics and student achievement. Also, allowing students the option to choose what they wear helps them express their individuality and personal style. This can lead to increased confidence and a stronger sense of identity and student achievement.

Holler if you hear ME!

Communication is the best way to know how the children are! PGCPS and Thee G. James Gholson Middle School have employed a few tools (SchoolMAX, Knight Newsletter, SchoolMessenger) to enable two-way communication between school and families. Teachers post attendance, assignment grades and comments via SchoolMAX. This is the primary tool to stay informed of your child's attendance, grades, and progress. It is PGCPS' and my expectation that parents will regularly check (at least once a week) their children's grades in SchoolMAX and intervene. Best practice- Log into SchoolMAX with your child and have them review their attendance, assignment and course grades with you on Wednesdays of each week. This midweek check gives children time to ask their teachers questions and make any needed corrections. If you have questions or concerns as you are reviewing your child's grades, email your child's teacher or reach out to their professional school counselor to schedule a parent/teacher conference.

Remember, PGCPS and Gholson MS primarily communicate via SchoolMessenger. Click the Family Portal SchoolMAX hyperlink to make sure your phone, text, and email are connected so you don't miss important messages from PGCPS and Gholson. Check on your friends and family with children at Gholson MS to make sure they are connected too. It's important to ensure your desired contact information is correct before SchoolMAX switches to Synergy in late June.

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week was amazing as our children looked into their future at Career Day (several of the presenters wrote how they were impressed with our children- as they should be), sailed the Patapsco River and explored Wild Rice! Check out Twitter @gholson_Knights to see pictures of all that we got into last week.

This week select eighth graders will embark on the Smithsonian Museum field trip; we vote in the primary elections (MAY 14 School is CLOSED); Quarter 4 progress reports will be available to view; and Saturday Academy will be in full swing. We also continue with our Literacy MCAP testing. Please ensure your child has turned in their Chromebook and gets a solid night of 8 hours of sleep so they are primed to do their best. Continue to vote (below) to change Gholson from a mandatory  uniform school to a voluntary  uniform school.

We will continue to  push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push Positivity at THEE G" by-

Remember, in order for students to be invited to field trips, incentive activities (dances, pep rallies, 8th Grade Dance, 8th Grade Class Trip, 8th Grade Awards, etc.) they must meet the following criteria-

Students who do not meet this criteria will not attend or participate.

And thank you to all who continue to advocate, write letters and call the area office on behalf of Gholson Middle School! Your advocacy has brought much needed attention and prioritization of the needs of our children. Please continue to write, call, and lift your voice to PGCPS leadership at http://apps.pgcps.org/pls/apex/f?p=370; email this letter to PGCPS Board of Education at District 6 Branndon.Jackson@pgcps.org; State senator joanne.benson@senate.state.md.us; PGCPS leadership at Associate Superintendent Amelia.Coleman@pgcps.org and Superintendent House Superintendent@pgcps.org

To those who have negative opinions about Gholson MS, I ask "What is your most recent step you've personally taken to improve Gholson MS and our children's experience?" And "What is the evidence of the impact of your actions?" If you are struggling to answer these questions, I invite you to -

Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to listen to a favorite piece of music and remember what it means to you this "Meaningful May."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Parents, Help us uphold high expectations

Did you know some of our children, maybe even your child, is at school cussing hard, using disgusting language, misrepresenting and embarrassing you?

Please read a parent’s observation of a seventh grade class on the left. Please note this concern can apply to almost every class in the building. The parent could not stomach this for an hour, yet my staff is subjected to this 7.5 hours a day. And staff waste valuable instructional time addressing and redirecting this profane language.

Parents, we need your support in enforcing high expectations! Reinforce your expectations for polite language and respect with your child. We have given students more than their fair share of warnings and now students observed using profanity will be removed from the classroom and assigned the maximum 3-days of ISS (see PGCPS Student Code of Conduct). After ISS, if students are observed to continue to use profanity, parents will be asked to shadow for a day or student will be assigned a short term out-of-school suspension. Our children’s school environment must be free from profanity, disrespect, and violence in order for 100% of them to be safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Don’t you agree?

Hopefully, you work in an environment that is peaceful, where you are respected and it is free from profanity. All of our children and staff deserve that, so help us to achieve it.

The bottom pictures on the left depict how our children have misused and mistreated the shared spaces and materials in our building. When students misuse materials, spaces and do not do their part by cleaning up after themselves they impact their own safety, sanitation and experience of clean facilities as staff have separate facilities to dine and relieve themselves.

Parents, speak with your child and encourage them to P.U.S.H. positivity at Thee G by cleaning up after themselves; using toilet paper appropriately; and reporting any unsanitary, unsafe behaviors.

Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

This week we celebrate our amazing teachers and staff! You won't find any folks who work harder to pour into your children each day despite any obstacles they face! Please take time this week to show your appreciation to your child's teachers and partner with them in support of your child! Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful! #ThankATeacher

Monday, you may receive Notices of Concern from teachers alerting you to your child's grade if it is below 70%; unresolved behavior concerns; or if your child has missed 3 or more days. If you don't hear from your children's teacher, please reach out and check in to make sure your child is still on the right track. We will reach midquarter Monday and progress report grades will go in. This is a GREAT time to intervene if their grades have gone off track.  If your child has a D or E in math or language arts (RELA), definitely bring your child to our Saturday Academy 9:00 -12 PM for free tutoring and enrichment. Some teachers are also offering extra credit for student attendance. This week we continue with our Literacy MCAP testing. Please ensure your child has turned in their Chromebook and gets a solid night of 8 hours of sleep so they are primed to do their best. We also look forward to the seventh grade field trip to explore wild rice and Career Day May 8.  Continue to vote (below) to change Gholson from a mandatory  uniform school to a voluntary school.
