Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Did you miss something last week? 😏 The Knight Family KNewsletter! Well, it's back! We missed you too! Last week was a short week with systemwide parent/teacher conference day, Social Emotional Learning day at Gholson, sixth grade and section 710 science fair, Family Movie KNight and we said goodbye to Eighth Grade ELA teacher, Ms. Eubanks. This week we look forward to the Black History Month evening program, parent meeting to support our students who are failing, and the release of the third quarter progress report grades via SchoolMAX

Thank you to all who continue to advocate, write letters and call the area office on behalf of Gholson Middle School! Your advocacy has brought much needed attention and prioritization of the needs of our children. Please continue to write, call, and lift your voice to PGCPS leadership at http://apps.pgcps.org/pls/apex/f?p=370; email this letter to PGCPS Board of Education at District 6 Branndon.Jackson@pgcps.org; State senator joanne.benson@senate.state.md.us; PGCPS leadership at Associate Superintendent Amelia.Coleman@pgcps.org and Superintendent House Superintendent@pgcps.org

To those who have negative opinions about Gholson MS, I ask "What is your most recent step you've personally taken to improve Gholson MS and our children's experience?" And "What is the evidence of the impact of your actions?" If you are struggling to answer these questions, I invite you to -

Parents note- if children come to 900 Nalley Road and try to do what they want, disrupt learning, and put the safety of everyone at risk, I will not allow them to be at 900 Nalley Road without their parent/guardian. Either children will be at home with their parent/guardian or they will be in school with their parent/guardian.

Please know we don't accept any excuses for students not being in their assigned location on time and out of the hallways. Our children are old enough and intelligent enough to know their daily schedule and to follow verbal and written directions. To accept any excuse that discounts their abilities and intelligence is disrespectful.

If you believe these measures are too harsh, you have two choices-

We will continue to  push Positivity at "THEE G." It is my expectation that our children will "push P(ositivity) at THEE G" by-

Be sure to discuss school expectations with your child daily so they are able to make sure they and everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Only when students meet our expectations and abide by our procedures and protocols can we ensure their safety, learning, and the orderliness of school operations.

One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to thank three people you are grateful to and tell them why in this "Friendly February."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week selected eighth graders took the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test and earned community service hours. We continued assessing our students' progress in the English Language Development program and celebrated all students who pushed Positivity at THEE G with a field trip to Washington, DC to watch the Capital City Go-Go in G-league basketball and a game day for all students who had 100% of their class to "Beat the Bell". We successfully began implementing our new safety enhancements and the Area Office 2 visited to witness the great works at Gholson MS.

And this week, remember the Parent Support Center will be open this Monday at Gholson 5 PM. Come ask questions and get help with any of your concerns- our parent engagement assistant, school counselor, technology technicians will be available to help. Request an appointment via Chavonne.Chase@pgcps.org. Also, we look forward to the Peace and Love dance this Friday for students who exhibit Prepared, Uplifting, Safe, and Helpful behaviors; Community-Wide Community Meeting and State of the Union address; and Quarter 2 Honor Roll Assembly.

Parents, if children come to 900 Nalley Road and try to do what they want, disrupt learning, and put the safety of everyone at risk, I will not allow them to be at 900 Nalley Road without their parent/guardian. Celebrating black history month

We are a vibrant Black and Brown community! This month we celebrate the contributions of members of the African diaspora. This is a time of celebration as we are all members of the African diaspora.

In 1915, in response to the lack of information on the accomplishments of Black people available to the public, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Few people studied Black history and it wasn't included in textbooks prior to the creation of Negro History Week.

This week was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist (someone who wanted to end the practice of enslaving people), and former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln led the United States during the Civil War, which was primarily fought over the enslavement of Black people in the country. Many schools and leaders began recognizing the week after its creation.

The week-long event officially became Black History Month in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the recognition to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every February since.

Since the first Negro History Week in 1926, other countries have joined the United States in celebrating Black people and their contribution to history and culture, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Today Black History Month continues the discussion of descendants of the African Diaspora people and their contributions through activities such as museum exhibits and film screenings, and by encouraging the study of achievements by African Americans year-round.

WE LOVE OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS! ♥️

Our professional school counselors implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.” Our school counselors are engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”

We love our professional school counselors and are grateful for them and their impact on our Gholson MS community. Reach out to Mrs. Jones, eighth grade, Jessica.HunterBass@pgcps.org; Mrs. Epps, seventh grade, Robbin.Epps@pgcps.org; and Dr. Doswell, sixth grade, Kelley.Doswell@pgcps.org and let them know you appreciate them!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Last week we wrapped up Math Benchmarks 2. Eighth graders enjoyed a dress down Friday. Our cheerleaders brought home third place from the Jaguar Cheer Invitational. Parents gathered for our monthly Parent Leaders Club. And we fed hundreds of families and community members via our monthly Family Food Market.

This week we look forward to our Capital City Go-Go field trip celebrating students who "pushed positivity at the G" during quarter 2; 8th grade NAEP assessment; and students bringing home their report cards. We appreciate your cooperation, patience and understanding as we implement this additional security measure to ensure everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

NAEP is a congressionally mandated program that is overseen and administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences. The National Assessment Governing Board, an independent body appointed by the Secretary of Education, sets NAEP policy.

Principal's Message

Greetings Undaunted Knights!

And how are the children? How would you answer this question?

Thank you parents and staff for your support! Looking at our attendance and discipline data you can see our Knights are on the right track and that is only because of your partnership! I appreciate your support of our children and THEE G. James Gholson Middle School! We are UNDAUNTED! Join me Tuesday, February 13 for our virtual community-wide meeting celebrating our wins and making plans to overcome our obstacles.

Last week we entered QUARTER 3 and the second half of the year! Teachers submitted report card grades. You will be able to see them online via SchoolMAX beginning January 30 and students will bring you home a copy February 9. We continued administering the ACCESS and Benchmark assessments. Additionally, eligible students enjoyed a mini yard show presented by the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. These are both traditionally and historically Black and Latino organizations respectively. Three new afterschool opportunities (Inner Beauty, Collage & Animation, and Music Production) began. Students and families braved the cold weather to watch "Snow Day" at Family Movie Night. And this weekend our Gholson Cheerleaders brought home FIRST place from their first cheer competition of the season!

This week students will be motivated by Mr. Taylor, who will speak to them about depression, academic success, trauma and how to create a legacy. And they will get to tour the School Club Fair to get an opportunity to join extracurricular clubs  at Gholson. The Parent Support Center will be open this Monday at Gholson 5 PM and the Family Food Market will be open Thursday at 3:30 PM.

Our students will continue taking the RELA and Math Benchmark 2 assessments, so it's important they bring their charged Chromebook and charger to school each day. If you're having difficulties with your Chromebook/it's been lost or stolen, email Mrs. Mitchell (Nikki.McElveen@pgcps.org).

Many thanks to all the parents and students who have sent letters to the Board of Education, Maryland Senate, Area 2 Office and Superintendent House asking for help with our, now, 18 vacancies! Please keep writing and helping me to advocate so our babies get the best that they deserve. I also invite all parents to join us for the next Parent Leaders Club. This is an opportunity to voice your concerns and take action with other parents to make Gholson a place where your child is safe, seen, and supported to be successful.

One more thing- Today's Action for Happiness encourages us to ask other people about things they've enjoyed recently in this "Happier January."

Together, with you, we are the #UndauntedKnights. Together, we will overcome any and all obstacles to ensure our beloved children feel safe, seen, and supported to be successful!

This newsletter will be updated Sunday nights and posted on the G. James Gholson Middle website to keep all students, staff, families and community members informed. Be sure to read and make note of all details.

Field TRIP February 8

Eligible students are invited to join us February 8 for a field trip to see the Capital City Go-Go basketball team play the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The cost to students is $10 which goes towards transportation. Note this is a reduced cost and change from the permission slip. Students can get a permission slip from their grade level student advocate, assistant principal, Mr. Winston or Coach M. All permission slips and money should be returned to Mr. Winston or Coach M by February 5

To be eligible to go, students must have met the following criteria during Quarter 2-
