Mussie Gebre is currently an instructor teaching DeafBlind Interpreting at Ohlone College in Fremont, California. In this role, Gebre touches on the subject of orientation and mobility (O&M), aiming to prepare future interpreters to work effectively with deafblind people by mastering not only effective interpreting but also the techniques for safe mobility within settings where interpreting takes place.
In addition to his work as an instructor, Gebre is an expert in the field of assistive technology. For more than twenty years, Gebre provided highly individualized technology assessment and training services to empower people with disabilities – mainly deafblind – to live independently and productively. This decades-long career led to the founding of iBraille LLC, an accessibility and usability testing and consulting company dedicated to advancing digital accessibility and universal design.
Gebre was born and raised in Eritrea, a small country in northeast Africa. Gebre's mother, frustrated by the lack of educational services for deafblind children and inspired by the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, brought Gebre to live with her and his American-born siblings. Gebre attended public schools in Oakland, California, eventually graduating with a dual degree in Anthropology and Psychology from San Francisco State University.
