Blended Learning Models

Blended learning can be delivered through a range of different approaches. The balance between face-to-face and online components will depend on the curriculum, learning outcomes, learners’ needs and prior experiences, teacher competence and confidence and access to digital technologies and reliable internet.

The majority of blended-learning programmes resemble one of four models: Rotation, Flex, À La Carte, and Enriched Virtual. The Rotation Model includes four sub-models: Station Rotation, Lab Rotation, Flipped Classroom and Individual Rotation (Christensen et al., 2013; Horn and Staker, 2014; Powell et al., 2015).

Having reviewed each of the blended models, this interactive resource will focus on the Flipped Classroom, the Enriched Virtual and the Station Rotation Models of blended learning as these three models facilitate learning taking place both in the classroom (on either a daily or less regular basis depending on context) and at home.
