Giving Feedback Using Technology

Technology is an enabler of effective feedback. Teachers can create and distribute assignments, allowing learners to complete the tasks that have been set. Once completed and returned, teachers can provide feedback and guidance to their learners. This allows teachers and learners to continue the feedback loop in a blended learning environment.

Please see the assessment and feedback section on the PDST's Distance Learning webpage and the NCCA's Primary Assessment page for more information on assessment and effective feedback.

Benefits of using Digital Technologies for Feedback

  • It can be conducted remotely, saving valuable classroom time.

  • It allows the teacher to keep a record of feedback which can be saved within the learner’s profile in a digital portfolio.

  • It can improve learner engagement by providing specific guidance on how to improve a piece of work.

  • When used against specific success criteria, it can provide clarity to learners on what is expected or required.

Good Practice Videos

The videos below outline how two primary schools have used digital technologies to engage in assessment and feedback effectively.

Google Classroom for Assessment and Feedback

Google Classroom is an effective virtual learning environment tool used to design, create and distrubute assignments and tasks to learners. Through Google Classroom, teachers can engage in meaningful feedback with learners.

Online Assessment

Having taken part in the PDST pilot scheme for the Digital Portfolios Project, Siobhán Ní Uptáin’s school, Gaeilscoil Ros Eo, wanted to make the best use of the resources they already had. Here, Siobhán describes how she integrated use of Chromebooks, collaborative project work and online assessment to enhance implementation of the Primary Language Curriculum with her second class pupils. Creating Assignments

Below are two possible options teachers can use to assign work for their learners. There are many other platforms also available in this regard.

Creating Assignments in Google Classroom

Google Classroom aims to simplify creating, distributing, and grading assignments in a paperless way. Google Classroom helps to to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and learners.

Creating Assignments in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is the hub for collaboration in Office 365 that integrates communication between teachers and learners, educational content, and other tools needed for blended learning such as creating and distributing assignments.

Providing Feedback Using Digital Tools

Providing Feedback on Class Dojo

This screencast explores how teachers can support learners by providing feedback to pupils using ClassDojo Portfolios.

Providing Audio Feedback on Seeaw

This screencast explores how teachers can support learners by providing audio feedback, or text comments with pupils using Seesaw.

Providing Text Feedback on Microsoft Teams

Text-based feedback is very useful for providing feedback to learners on work that they have submitted using the school’s online platform.

Voice-to-Text Feedback

Voice-to-text is a useful feature of many word processing programmes. While you cannot use this feature when leaving a comment for a learner on Google Docs or Slides, it may be useful for teachers in other ways.

Providing Audio Feedback

Audio feedback can be used as a means of providing feedback to learners and as an alternative to the more traditional text-based feedback.

Providing Audio/ Voice Comments

Kaizena is a Chrome Extension that can be used to provide voice feedback to learners within Google Docs. Please note that both the teacher and learner will need to have the extension activated in the Google Admin Console.

Providing Audio/ Voice Comments

This screencast explores how teachers can support learners by providing audio feedback, using digital ink or sharing written feedback using Microsoft One Note.

PDST Digital Technologies YouTube Channel: Assessment and Feedback Playlist

The Digital Technologies team has created a YouTube playlist of screencasts demonstrating how to use a selection of digital tools to support assessment and feedback.

Case Studies

Case Study A

A small, rural DEIS primary school uses Microsoft Teams to design and create blended learning tasks and assignments. Teachers create a Word document template for various writing tasks which are to be completed at home. Teachers scaffold learning activities during in-class time and then distribute the Word document template to all pupils via Microsoft Teams. Once they have completed the Word document, pupils submit the first draft of their writing. The teacher responds using the comments feature, giving effective feedback in order to focus pupils on the success criteria for the task as well as providing direction as to the next steps of the writing process.

Case Study B

A large, urban primary school is using Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to create and assign pupil work. Teachers use the voice-to-text feature on Google Docs to give summary feedback on pupils’ project work. (Note: the voice-to-text feature cannot be used in the comments section in Google Docs and so feedback will appear in the main document itself). Teachers and pupils engage in an iterative process of drafting and giving feedback on project work over the course of two weeks. Having received the final draft of the project via Google Classroom, teachers use the voice-to-text feature to give an overall summary of the pupils’ work, detailing the areas of excellence as well as feedback on areas for future improvement.
