Blended Learning Models
Below you will find an outline of the models of blended learning and a brief description regarding the approach each model entails.
Diagram adapted from Christensen Institute, 2021
Rotation Model: A course/ subject in which learners rotate on a pre-determined timetable constructed by the teacher between learning stations, at least one of which includes online learning.
Flipped Classroom Model: A course/ subject where learners engage in both off-site online learning (in place of homework) as well as face-to-face learning within the classroom context to deepen their understanding of a topic.
Station Rotation Model: A course/ subject where learners rotate through all stations in a defined area (e.g. a classroom)
Lab Rotation Model: A course/ subject where learners rotate to a computer lab for the online learning aspect of their rotation.
Individual Rotation Model: A course/ subject where learners rotate to specific stations as determined by the teacher as opposed to all stations in the room.
À La Carte Model: Learners can opt to take an online course with an online teacher in addition to their face-to-face courses.
Enriched Virtual Model: This option allows learners to undertake the majority of their work online, in addition to attending face-to-face sessions on a scheduled basis. Unlike the Flipped Classroom approach outlined above, the Enriched Virtual Model does not require learners to attend daily face-to-face classes.
Flex Model: Learners move on a flexible schedule between activities in line with their learning needs. Online learning is the backbone within this model, with teachers providing support to learners as needed.
