The Peel District School Board offers a variety of programs to support the needs of students who are Deaf/ hard of hearing. Students are either supported (1) in the mainstream by an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, or (2) in a special education classroom with other students who are Deaf/hard of hearing by a Classroom Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and an Educational Assistant.
All of our students are also supported by a Consulting Educational Audiologist and the FM Technologist. Please see our homepage for contact information for all Deaf & Hard of Hearing Department staff.
More information about the levels of support provided by the PDSB Deaf & Hearing Department is provided below.
Students in the mainstream who are supported by an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing receive one of three levels of support, based on their hearing profile and academic needs. The following provides more information about each level of support:
1) Monitor Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + in-service meeting with educators to explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing.
2) Indirect Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + regular FM checks by the FM Technologist or the Itinerant Teacher + in-service meeting with educators to provide a demo of FM technology and explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing.
3) Direct Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + regular FM checks by the Itinerant Teacher + in-service meeting with educators to provide a demo of FM technology and explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing + regular academic support in consultation with the school team.
Students enrolled in the program are placed through a Central Board Office Identification Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) meeting. The meeting identifies or confirms the student as "Exceptional Communication: Hard of Hearing" and offers a placement in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Class.
The program is designed to support students with a diagnosis of a hearing loss who also have additional needs in language development.
