Understanding Chartbeat
Chartbeat lets Patch editors measure their readership both historically and in real time through interactive graphics and reports sent via email. Patch's main Chartbeat page (pictured to the right) illustrates the number of readers, or "concurrents," on Patch at any given time.
In the example on the right, 9,767 people are engaging with Patch, with 8 percent recirculating from one page to another. On average, readers are engaging with a page for 33 seconds.
To find your personal real-time engagement stats, search your name in the "All Authors" box at the top of the screen.
In this example, Patch editor John Ferak has 168 concurrent readers. We can see his Empty Burger King story is leading with 106 readers, followed by a story about a deadly crash, which has 37 readers.
In this sample, Chartbeat tells us 80 of John's current readers are from Google, 40 are from email and 16 are from Facebook. With nearly 16,000 page views today, John is generating strong traffic.
Chartbeat can also offer a closer look at what is driving traffic to a particular story. In this example, nearly 10 percent of John's traffic is coming from Facebook, namely a post with 349 interactions. We can see 92 percent of page visitors are on mobile devices.
In the bottom right corner, we can also see readers are navigating from this page to other pages, likely because of linkouts in the story.
Editors can use the data provided by Chartbeat to tailor their approaches to their readership.
A weak social media response could indicate the editor would benefit from more interaction or another social share. A strong response could indicate the post could also perform well on another social platform or to a nearby Patch Facebook page.
If recirculation is low, it might indicate an editor would benefit from inserting a "Read Next" or "Related" section into the story.
Editors can also use Chartbeat's Reports feature to automatically receive a daily digest that includes data from the previous day. To set up a report, hover your cursor over the left toolbar and select "Reports" from the "Reporting" tab.
To receive a personalized daily report, select the "Author" report template and select your author name from the drop-down menu.
Each morning, following days when authors have traffic on their stories, Chartbeat will automatically send an emailed report detailing engagement, including engaged minutes and pageviews.
Your report will detail things like pageviews, total engaged time, average engaged time and top story performance.
