Student instructions
Introduction
This assessment activity requires you to apply theoretical knowledge of functional anatomy, biomechanical principals, skill learning, and sport psychology to learning a chosen sporting skill with the non-preferred side of your body. You will then evaluate your application of that knowledge.
You will be assessed on the logic and clarity of the judgements and explanations you make about how biophysical principles relate to learning physical skills and about the interrelationships between those principles. You will also be assessed on how well you support your judgements and explanations with evidence from your own and others’ research.Â
Biophysical principles must be applied by the student as they relate to the learning of physical skills.
More than one biophysical principle is required to be demonstrated in relation to the learning of physical skills. These principles may include: skill learning, sports psychology, biomechanics or functional anatomy. Focusing on the most relevant biophysical principles will allow for more depth in the student explanation/evaluation.
Anatomical knowledge is inherent in the understanding of biomechanics. This anatomical knowledge should be explained rather than identifying joints or lists of muscles.
Student responses must provide an explanation that includes:
what the biophysical principle being applied is
how and why each biophysical principle relates to the learning of physical skills
specific examples from personal experiences.
For a verbal response, teacher annotation should be summarised to reflect the criteria of the standard.
Each biophysical principle must be explained in detail how and why they relate to the learning of physical skills. A clear interrelationship between the biophysical principles is required to be explained. For example, biomechanics (force summation) and skill learning (feedback).
Student responses must include an evaluation of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills. A clear interrelationship between the biophysical principles is required to be evaluated. This may include:
what biophysical principle(s) is the most/least beneficial when learning physical skills and reasons why relating to the learning of physical skills supported with specific examples
changes/modifications made to improve the learning of the physical skill.
Introduction (copy and paste) We started playing badminton by removing the racket and shuttle and replacing with a ball. (explain why)
Key features to learning badminton
Decision making
Strategy
Footwork
An example of good decision making was......
My strategy I used was...
I did this by......
To win a point in badminton, we need to make the shuttle hit the floor of our opponents court.
Using a strategy and inter-relating this with projectile motion concepts can enable me to win a point.
Projectile motion concepts
height of release
angle of releaseÂ
Speed
Air Resistance
Gravity
Explain your strategy in relation to these projectile motion concepts
To be balanced and stable, we can
Broaden Base of support
Lower Center of gravity
Ensure the centre line of gravity is going directly through the base of support
If a body part comes away from the centre line, compensate by putting another body part in the opposite direction.
Doing this enables our body to produce more force and direct those forces with more accuracy
Learning correct footwork is essential in badminton. Footwork ensures we can defend our court. It also ensures we are executing our shots facing the correct direction. We are also executing these shots from a more balanced and stable position. Being balanced gives us a better chance of accurately directing our forces.
Describe what good footwork looks like
Link footwork to principles of balance of stability (see video across)
Make judgement statements after critically evaluating the use of these principles in learning how to play badminton
Explain how newtons laws relate to learning the skill that you have chosen.
Newtons laws relate to force and motion. Badminton involves force and motion.
Law 1: Inertia
Law 2: Force = mass x acceleration
Law 3: Action/Reaction (equal and opposite)
Inter-relate Newtons laws to other bio physical principles you have previously learnt
Force summation principles relate to using our body to produce the maximum amount of force and power
1. Use as many muscles and joints as possible
2. Order - big to small
3. timing - make the movements smooth
4. Full range of motion in joints
5. Fully extend out each joint in follow through
Force summation principles are relevant in badminton. We need force to clear the shuttle, high, and to the back of the court. We also require large amounts of force when smashing the shuttle
Â
Are there force summation principles that you use?
Are there force summation principles that you do not use? If not why not? Is it because using some of these principles gives up your ability to be accurate with these forces?
The elbow joint is a hinge joint. In the preparation phase of the movement, I can position the joint vertically in line with the racket, which means when I extend, the forces are going directly to the target I am aiming for. This helps with accuracy. The disadvantage of using this technique is that I give up force summation principles, because I am not using my larger shoulder joint.Â
Take a screenshot of yourself using vidalyze to see if you do this?Â
Explain what you are doing, why you doing this, the pros and cons of your technique and what you might change to improve your performance.
Video your physical skill again. Try to implement your learnings. Compare and contrast this video with your initial performanceÂ
evaluate how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills.
This video is fantastic at explaining how factors inter-relate.
In this assessment you must also inter-relate facte factors.
When you take one action what are the outcomes and how does it inter-relate
Make a video of yourself performing a sporting or movement skill.
Take the two videos. One from front on, one from side on
Upload the video into your vidalyze account. Tip: You may need to create a dropbox account to this as it seems to wok better from this
Lock-down recording Monday 17 August
Lockdown recoding Wednesday 19 August
Aspects to consider in your screencast
Which joints are hinge joints
Are your hinge joints lined up so that when you extend them they are going directly to the target
What muscle is contacting to extend this joint
Explain how the more you use your shoulder the more accuracy you may lose, however, you will also be able to produce more force. (excellence)
What is the outcome you are looking for in your chosen skill?
How important is force production? How important is Accuracy?
Explain the inter-relationship between force summation and balance and stability. Which is the most benificial? How does this affect the your technique in the skill you have chosen?
Positives/Negatives
1. As many muscles and joints as possible
2. Order - big to small
3. Timing
4. Use full range of motion in joints
5. Fully extend in follow through phase
Broad base of support
lower center of gravity
Center line going through the base of support
Compensation
Identify the principles of balance and stability in your video?
What are you doing well, what needs to be improved?
Advantages and disadvantages of using these principles?
Are there any inter relationships with other bio physical principles?
