Week beginning - Monday 23rd February 2026
Take a peek at all the amazing things we've been learning this week!
This week in Year 4, we have had a fantastic start to the term with lots of exciting exploration and discussion. We began by introducing our central idea and lines of inquiry for this term.
Central Idea
Humans use science and technology to improve access to resources.
Lines of Inquiry:
Describing human involvement in the development of electricity.
Explaining how humans adapt and innovate to overcome challenges.
Evaluating how sustainable resources can positively impact communities around the world.
To spark our thinking, we explored a range of older electrical appliances, including a TomTom sat nav, DVD player, battery charger and a plug-in home telephone. These items prompted some wonderful conversations. The sat nav was definitely the highlight, with some pupils suggesting it might be a tiny television or even a games console!
We then moved on to investigating simple circuits. Working in pairs, the children were given two wires, a battery, a bulb and a bulb holder, with the challenge of making the bulb light up. The excitement when they successfully completed the circuit was incredible! The pupils demonstrated excellent teamwork, discussion and curiosity. They also explored what would happen if they added an extra bulb without an additional battery — which led to further questioning and problem-solving, even if the results were not always successful.
In Maths, we have been learning about unit and non-unit fractions. The concept became much clearer when we related it to sharing a pizza among friends. The children worked hard to understand the basics before deepening their learning through reasoning and challenge questions.
It has been a very successful week in Year 4, full of enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful learning. What a fantastic start to an exciting term ahead!
