The summer after sophomore year each student spent a minimum of 4 weeks doing science research work. We presented this newly gained knowledge or experience as a presentation, which received feedback from our peers and teachers. This collaborative criticism was a frequent part of the science research class, and as a result of this preparation, we have improved public speaking, organizational, collaborative, and critical thinking skills. In the spring, we helped the sophomores write several letters to research labs and gave them interview and lab tips. Speaking of competitions as 11th graders, we have had several juniors submit their research to regional competitions such as JSHS and Terra NYC STEM Fair. We even had one junior get their work published in a scholarly journal! Lastly, each student will continue to be mentored by a local scientist for our science research endeavors. We are looking forward to keeping our connections to our labs for the rest of our high school journey.
