We began the science research program by completing 10 hours of preliminary research during the summer prior to sophomore year, which helped us to begin narrowing our interests. As the newest members of the program, our job was to find a scientific topic in which we would conduct research for the next few years. This year, we read and presented a minimum of two scientific papers as a way to develop our interests and find professors working in the field. Meanwhile, we sent letters to scientists around NYC who were doing research that interested us in order to ask for an internship. Once a match was found, we began working at labs and building relationships with our new mentors.
We have been so lucky to benefit from the amazing Science Research program, and all it offers. We have loved hearing from the knowledgeable upperclass students, learning from our teachers, and getting to know each other and our passions. We are so excited to continue this journey, and eventually become these knowledgeable upperclass students. It has not been easy, but we have learned how to persevere, learn, and ask for help. These skills have not only helped us in the context of Science Research, but in all of our classes, and beyond the walls of the Packer Collegiate Institute. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts to anyone and everyone who has supported us through our introductory year in the Science Research Program.
