ELA: Community Helpers
In Unit 2 of Wonders, our young inquirers explored the central idea of how people work together to support a community. Students investigated the roles of different community helpers and reflected on how their actions contribute to a caring, connected society. Throughout the unit, learners practiced communication skills, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated curiosity as they built their understanding of community interdependence.
The highlight of our inquiry came when students met real-life community helpers—Chef Maria and Chef Larry! They joined us as guest experts, sharing their knowledge and modeling what it means to be balanced, caring contributors. Students followed procedural steps, collaborated with peers, and took responsibility for their learning as they created simple, delicious recipes: apple parfaits, a refreshing smoothie, and creamy mac and cheese.
Our learners finished the unit not only with full hearts and full bellies, but with a deeper understanding of how each of us can take action to help our community thrive.
