Imagine a Scotland without gender-based violence
Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in Scotland
#16Days 25th November - 10th December
I am Chief Inspector Simon Shanks and have recently taken up the role of Area Commander for West Dunbartonshire. As a Police Officer of 22 years and a father, I am committed to doing my very best as an individual and as part of my organisation to target Gender Based Violence.
My approach includes influencing friends, colleagues, and relatives and not just those I meet through work. My staff and I are focussed on promoting an inclusive workplace and society. Where everyone can be themselves and expect to be treated with respect.
I recently attended the flag raising at West Dunbartonshire Council Buildings to mark the beginning of 16 days of action, tackling violence against Women and Girls. Despite the weather this event was very well attended by a large cross section of our community and shows how committed we all are to eradicate gender-based violence.
16 Days of Activism
Today marks the start of 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence (GBV).
This is an international campaign that encourages action and awareness against all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG).
The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women,
to 10 December, International Human Rights Day, this annual campaign reminds us that a brighter, violence-free future is within our reach.
Throughout the 16 Days, we will share some of the actions, support and guidance available to our communities.
