Students are timetabled for Art & Design one period a week in S1. Students will experience drawing skills in their still life unit, focusing on the use of line and creating accuracy of shape. Students will also learn how to apply tone to create form and realism. In the pattern design unit, students will respond to a design brief and create a motif. They will learn about different types of pattern and create their own. In the critical work, students will take part in class discussion and independent research in their analysis of a significant design piece.

Students are timetabled for Art & Design two periods a week in S2. Students will develop their knowledge of drawing skills in their expressive units. In the design unit, students will develop their skills in creating a design in response to a design brief. In the critical work, students will take part in class discussion and independent research in their analysis of a significant expressive artwork.

At the end of S2, students are invited to choose their subjects for further study in S3. Students who choose Art & Design as an area of further study in S3, are timetabled for Art & Design three periods a week. Students will develop their knowledge of drawing skills, and creating work of increasing accuracy through the work in their expressive units. In the design unit, students will develop their skills in creating a design in response to a design brief. In the critical work, students will take part in class discussion and independent research in their analysis of significant Art & Design pieces- the critical work in S3 will build on their experiences from S1/2 but also develop their knowledge and confidence in the written area as students move towards sitting National Qualifications in S4.
