Pathway Information
Pathways throughout the BGE are fluid and strong sustained progress at a Middle or Lower Pathway can lead to a pupil being moved to an Upper or Middle Pathway.
BGE
S1
Upon entering S1, all pupils work on a Transition Block until the October Holidays. This Block of work covers Level 2 content that some pupils may have covered in Primary School. We find that using this time to consolidate and fill in any gaps in knowledge stands pupils in good stead throughout the rest of S1 and beyond. S1 pupils will then sit a Transition Assessment in October where we will then stream pupils into the most appropriate Pathway for their needs. At this stage pupils will be broad banded into new classes, with all pupils following the Pathway best suited to them and experiencing the same content regardless of which class they are in.
Pupils will continue to be assessed at key points in the S1 course to ensure they are making the required progress and are being fully supported.
S2
Pupils will continue on their Pathway into S2 and will start to experience content from the next level. Again pupils will be assessed throughout the year and will be given time to consolidate prior learning before each assessment.
S3
As pupils move into S3, they will experience more challenging content and will be preparing for their Senior Phase courses. Assessments will take place at the end of S3 which will confirm pupils are placed on the correct SQA course for S4.
Senior Phase
S4
Maths continues to be a core subject in S4 for all pupils. S4 pupils will work on the National Qualification most appropriate for them throughout S4.
National 5 Maths students will sit an Interim assessment (Prelim) in December of S4 to prepare them for a final SQA exam at the end of S4. A Supported Study program will take place in the run up to the Interim Assessments and the final exam in order to aid pupils in their revision.
National 3 and National 4 courses are internally assessed and all assessments will be carried out in class. Class teachers will inform pupils of test dates and will direct pupils to revision materials.
S5/6
Maths in S5/6 is optional for all pupils. Pupils may continue on the next level of their Pathway if they have passed the level below. If they have not passed the level below or would like to consolidate learning and upgrade their S4/5 result they can choose to study the same level as the previous year.
National 5/Higher/Advanced Higher Pupils will sit their Interim assessments in January in S5/6 and then the final SQA exam in May. Supported Study programs will take place in the run up to the Interim Assessments and the final exam.
National 5 Applications of Maths – This is a full National 5 course and is an alternative if pupils decide they do not want to study the usual National 5 Maths course in S5/6. The Applications of Maths course includes many of the same topics as the Maths course but does not include Algebra so can be more attainable for pupils who struggle with Algebra.
Broad General Education (S1-3)
From S1-3, Pupils will folow the Broad General Education (BGE) and will cover the following topics:
Number, money and measure
Estimation and rounding
Number and number processes
Multiples, factors and primes
Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages
Money
Time
Measurement
Mathematics – its impact on the world, past, present and future
Patterns and relationships
Expressions and equations.
Shape, position and movement
Properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects
