Here in the English department we have the following award categories for BGE pupils.
Compassionate Contributors
In this award, we celebrate pupils who consistently demonstrate empathy, kindness, and a commitment to the wellbeing of others in their school community.
Literary Legends
In this award, we celebrate pupils who have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication, and enthusiasm in English.
Each teacher will award one pupil per category at the end of each month. The names of chosen pupils will be displayed within the English corridor.
In S1, S2 and S3 our pupils will follow a broad general education (BGE). Pupils will be given opportunities to develop their skills in listening and talking, reading and writing and the personal and interpersonal skills which are important in life and the world of work.
Pupils will have the chance to develop skills in:
Critical writing
Creative writing
Functional writing
RUAE (Reading for Understanding, Analysis, and Evaluation) skills
Textual analysis skills
Talking and Listening
These skills will enable pupils to communicate effectively, think deeply, and engage confidently with a range of texts and real-world situations. They will also prepare pupils for National Qualifications.
In S4, S5 and S6, our pupils will undertake National Qualifications.
The main purpose of these courses is to provide learners with opportunities to develop the skills of listening, talking, reading and writing in order to understand and use language.
As learners develop their literacy skills, they will be able to process information more easily, apply knowledge of language in practical and relevant contexts, and gain confidence to undertake new and more challenging tasks in a variety of situations.
To ensure that each pupil has the opportunity to achieve whilst at SPTA we offer the following qualifications:
National 4 Literacy
National 4 English
National 5 Literacy
National 5 English
Higher English
Advanced Higher English
In S5 and S6, pupils also have the option to study Higher Media.
This would be considered a crash Higher as we currently do not offer National 5 Media.
The course allows pupils to learn about key aspects of media in reference to current media texts, understand the role of the media and how it affects the audience, and allows them creative space to make their own film in the assignment unit. We currently study Barbie (2023) and a range of music videos for exam work.
The assignment is coursework and is done across the year, worth 50% in total. The exam consists of two papers, with paper 1 worth 30% and paper 2 worth 20%.
In S5/6 pupils have the opportunity to study ESOL.
National 5 and Higher ESOL courses are equivalent English courses for learners whose first language is not English. Learners develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the English language, and also their knowledge of language.
These ESOL qualifications correspond with levels A1 to C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
