Building Confidence through Water
Oshkosh West Athletic Center Swimming Pool
As part of the MCO program, students have the opportunity to participate in swim lessons at Oshkosh West High School, offered in partnership with the OASD Recreation Department. This collaboration has been instrumental in creating access for students with refugee backgrounds (SRBs), helping them overcome barriers to participation and feel welcomed in spaces that may be new or unfamiliar.
Led by experienced instructors in a supportive and inclusive environment, the lessons are designed to help students build confidence in the water while learning essential swimming and water safety skills. It’s a fun and empowering way for students to stay active, develop new abilities, and gain valuable life skills—while knowing their presence is supported and celebrated.
At the Oshkosh West pool, students with refugee backgrounds (SRBs) are allowed to build confidence and learn essential life skills through on-site beginner swim lessons. These sessions provide a safe, welcoming space where students are introduced to fundamental techniques such as floating, breath control, and basic strokes.
Led by dedicated coaching staff, the lessons focus not only on water safety and swimming skills but also on helping each student feel comfortable, supported, and seen. By teaching these foundational skills, the program promotes physical fitness while empowering young SRBs to thrive, both in the water and beyond.

Our coaches prioritize safety in every lesson, staying close to each student to ensure they feel supported and only practice skills they are comfortable with. When students feel ready, they are gently encouraged to express themselves with confidence and take the next steps in learning at their own pace.
The MCO Swimming Program also creates meaningful opportunities for students to build friendships and a strong sense of community. As they learn new skills, support one another, and face challenges together in the water, students naturally form connections through shared experience. These bonds help ease feelings of isolation and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment. The pool becomes more than just a place to learn—it becomes a space filled with laughter, teamwork, and the beginnings of friendships that can grow well beyond the swimming lessons.
