Refugee Youth Mentor Program
Overview
The Refugee Youth Mentor Program is about integrating students into the community through academic, social, and post-secondary preparatory support while maintaining their own culture.
We do this by helping students with refugee backgrounds demonstrate growth in at least 3 of the following 9 areas: Social & Life Skills, Cultural Exploration, Peer Social Engagement, Academic Support. School Transition Assistance, Career Development, Health & Wellness Literacy, Financial Literacy, Civic Engagement.
The Refugee Youth Mentor Program at OASD is made possible through grants funded by the Department of Children's and Family and the Oshkosh Area United Way.
Participation Process
Participation and enrollment to the RYM I and RYM II program is based on eligibility and referrals from OASD Staff (e.g. teachers, mentors, administrators), community members, and partners. Please refer to the OASD RYM Program Student Referral form to refer students to the program. Once referral is received by the multicultural outreach team, the MCOT will confirm the students participation and a RYM program participation permission form must be signed prior to participating in the program. After the program permission form is signed, the MCOT will confer with the RYM team and assign a mentor to the student. The MCOT will help facilitate an introduction with the student and/or connect with the ESOL teacher to introduce the mentor to the student and establish an initial mentoring session.
