Building Confidence through Water
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to swim and understand water safety. Swimming is more than just a sport. It is a life-saving skill that can protect and empower children for a lifetime.
Through the MCO program, students can take swim lessons at the Downtown Oshkosh YMCA. An easily accessible location for families. In partnership with the YMCA, this program creates opportunities for students to learn swimming and water safety skills in a supportive, inclusive environment. It’s a fun, confidence-building experience that helps students stay active and feel welcomed in their community.
In addition, the Every Child a Swimmer (ECAS) program has given us the opportunity to further support this work by helping make these lessons accessible to the children we serve. Supported by the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), ECAS believes that swimming is an essential life skill and that swim education should be available to all. Their support helps us remove barriers and expand access for more students.
Together, through strong community partnerships, we are creating safer, more confident swimmers and making a lasting impact, one child at a time.
Downtown Oshkosh YMCA Swimming Pool
When students join swim lessons, they’re not just learning a skill — they’re discovering confidence, connection, and joy. Lessons are filled with engaging activities that make learning fun while helping students feel comfortable in a new environment and form friendships along the way.
YMCA offers programs for all ages and skill levels, ensuring everyone — from young beginners to adults — has the chance to learn and grow.
In a community surrounded by water, learning to swim is more than recreation — it’s an essential life skill. With skilled instructors and certified lifeguards, every lesson focuses on safety, awareness, and empowerment in and around the water.
Whether it’s their first time in the pool or a new milestone reached, these experiences build confidence that lasts far beyond the water.
Completion of 6 week swim lessons
"Many of our students had never had the opportunity to properly learn how to swim. Most, if not all, were absolutely terrified to even think about swimming, especially in water where they could not touch the bottom.
It took a lot of encouragement from the instructors and mentors working alongside them. We made sure to be with them every step of the way, and the instructors showed patience while helping students build trust in something they had never experienced before.
At first, some students were almost in tears just thinking about going into the deep end, not being able to grab on to someone or something... Now, it is the first thing they want to do. I am emotional knowing they can now confidently swim 25 yards, from 3 feet to 7 feet, without help.
Witnessing their growth firsthand has been beautiful. You can be any age and still learn how to swim. Knowing these students are now safer and more confident in the water is truly inspiring... that's all thanks to YMCA Staff and Every Childs a Swimmer." - Alicia MCO Assistant
