Explanation
This assignment involved choosing a biomedical product and researching its history, purpose, target users, and improvements that the product has undergone. The objective of the assignment was to investigate and learn about biomedical products/inventions. Additionally the assignment is meant to highlight the influence and importance of biomedical inventions. This assignment fits into the overall unit and course since not only is this a biomedical innovation course but the assignment provides a basic understanding of biomedical products and emphasizes the overall importance of biomedical products. This assignment allowed me to learn about cochlear implants on a deeper level, the product helps aid adults who suffer from profound deafness and children who do not benefit from regular hearing devices. Cochlear implants change the lives of people who do not have the ability to hear by providing these people with a new method of hearing.
Reflection
This assignment was done alongside a peer. Overall the assignment showcases my ability to collaborate with classmates and conduct research on specific topics.
The assignment represents important themes in the course since the course specializes in biomedical innovations the exact topic researched in this assignment. My partner and I were able to investigate the evolution and impact biomedical innovations have.
I appreciated that the assignment was directly related to the entire course topic of biomedical innovations. It created an appreciation for biomedical innovations.
The assignment connects to the larger world since biomedical innovations are used world wide. Some examples include toothbrushes, football helmets, and insulin pumps these devices have become common in today's day and age.
Explanation
The Investigating Human Physiology Lab was a group assignment that involved conducting lab and writing a lab report. The main objective was to measure the effect of an elevated heart rate on a person's reaction time. After conducting the experiment it was concluded that as individuals exercise, their heart rate increases, making their reaction time slower. The lab contain all necessary components including an abstract, hypothesis, procedure, results, analysis, and conclusion. This assignment fits into the overall unit since the skills used in the assignment are essential in this unit. This includes not only conducting an experiment and writing a report on the findings but analyzing and working in teams. By completing this assignment I learned and concluded that as a person's heart rate increase particularly due to exercise the person's reaction time becomes slower. Additionally I learned about work ethic and collaboration as I worked with a partner and pushed myself to leave my comfort zone of working alone.
Reflection
One of the challenging things about this assignment was having no reference or rubric. It would have been nice to have a sense of what components to add to the lab report
I would improve the assignment by adding more sections to the lab report. I would add a prediction section, where I would predict the outcome of the experiment (not like the hypothesis, it would explain how the results would look like). I would also add a background information where I discuss heart rate and reaction time. After reading over the report I notice there were a few grammatical mistakes which could be easily fixed.
I did not redo this assignment but it had been a while since we were assigned lab reports and it was good practice to finally have to write a complete lab report on top of conducting an experiment.
