Observation Obstacle (Gathering Observational Data)
A teacher candidate is circulating in a grade 6 classroom while students are solving a collaborative problem. He is specifically observing criteria he and his associate teacher identified earlier in their planning as well as learning skills. The teacher candidate puts down his notes to assist a small group with their questions and one of the students catches a glimpse of the notes that contained student data.
By engaging in the analysis of this Ted-Viv vignette, teacher candidates will:
Explain how fundamental principles of assessment (as outlined in Growing Success) are enacted/not enacted in the case;
Describe appropriate and inappropriate strategies to obtain student observational data;
Identify example(s) of unconscious bias;
Provide alternative teacher responses to student behaviour
