COURSE OVERVIEW
In this course, students will learn the skills and knowledge needed to launch their first startup enterprise. Students will learn about startup businesses and the real-world issues they face through case studies and research the critical elements for a startup in today’s changing world. They will set up relevant departments for a business activity and consider external factors that may influence its success.
Students will be able to apply their personal skills in supporting the success of an enterprise activity. They will be creative in planning and working towards running a successful business activity, and work as a team member to solve problems and pitch their new product idea. They will negotiate the use of resources, implement a plan, set up and run an enterprise and reflect upon learning outcomes.
COURSE OUTCOME
Students will keep a physical and homemade personal happiness journal throughout the course. They will also create items that benefit the whole school community or show care and empathy toward others. These will be showcased in our very own weekly Happy News bulletin on the Island School screens.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION:
They will learn about specific business functions such as marketing, operations, and finance, as well as the skills required by people in successful businesses. They will have practical, hands-on experience of how this would work in a real-world scenario, for example, marketing a new product and organising their resources. They will also learn about key economic factors affecting businesses, such as inflation and interest rates. These will all mirror the experience of a real world start up enterprise.
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
None
Students will develop their collaboration skills as they work together in groups to research and find real-world examples of businesses and their success criteria.
Students will develop new products and marketing ideas for their own startup.
COURSE OUTLINE
Week 1: Ignite Your Idea – Discover what it takes to be an entrepreneur and start brainstorming your first big business idea.
Week 2: Be a "Shark" – Dive into the world of Shark Tank, identify your business strengths, and learn how to hire the perfect team.
Week 3: The Dream Team – Join forces with partners from the Food Elements class to decide everyone’s specialised role in your new company.
Week 4: The Marketplace Challenge – Get the first look at the "Island School Market Place" event and begin deciding which dish your team will sell.
Week 5: Master Your Market – Become a researcher by creating surveys to find out exactly what your customers want to buy.
Weeks 6-7: The Master Plan – Analyse your research and use Canva to design a professional business plan that shows off your unique product.
Weeks 8-9: Design & Brand – Create your "Marketing Mix" and design cool, eco-friendly packaging that makes your product pop.
Week 10: Production Meeting – Meet with your production team to finalise your secret recipe, review costs, and prepare for a taste test.
Weeks 11-12: The Elevator Pitch – Practice your "Elevator Pitch" to convince investors why your sustainable business is the best in the room.
Week 13: Presentation Day – Take the stage and present your business ideas to the class.
Week 14: Build Your Brand – Design eye-catching posters and sketch out the ultimate look for your market stall.
Week 15: The Final Countdown – Finalise your finances and make the last-minute preparations for your big launch.
Weeks 16-18: The Big Event – Launch your business at the Trade Fair, compete for prizes, and celebrate your success as a new founder.
