COURSE OVERVIEW
In Back to the Future Coding, students will journey back to the golden age of arcade and console gaming to master the art of retro game creation. This project-based course emphasises creativity and design, teaching students how to translate nostalgic concepts into engaging interactive experiences.
Working in dynamic software teams, students will follow the full game development lifecycle: research, ideate, design, and ultimately create functional retro games using VIBE coding. Beyond just building, students will develop a deep understanding of the importance of the code created, connecting programming logic to aesthetic design and user experience. The course culminates in a portfolio-worthy game showcasing their collaborative technical and creative skills.
COURSE OUTCOME
The course culminates in a portfolio-worthy game showcasing their collaborative technical and creative skills.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION:
This course is practical and project-based, giving students experience that professionals use:
Game Creator Teams: Work in teams, just as people who make real video games do. This will help them learn how to share tasks and collaborate effectively.
Completing a Project: Practice all the steps needed to finish a large project, from the initial idea to the finished product. This experience is useful for any job or school project.
Connecting Code and Art: Learn how to use vib coding to control the design, pictures, and fun parts of your game. This is a critical skill for developers and designers who make apps and software.
A Finished Game: Create a real, working game that can be shared with friends and family, providing a great example of what you can build.
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
None
Students work in software teams and must manage the complete game development lifecycle. This requires them to effectively delegate specific roles (researcher, designer, coder) and share ownership of the final product
Students develop their creativity by translating classic retro-gaming concepts (existing works) into unique, functional games (new works/ideas). They must ideate original game mechanics, art styles, and storylines and execute them using vibe coding
COURSE OUTLINE
The Analysis
The Retro Deconstruction Hypothesis: Students play classic 8-bit games and list "Core Mechanics."
Design
The Protagonist Lore Formulation: AI Partner: Use AI to brainstorm 5 unique character flaws and a world name.
The Schematic Design Manifestation: Draw a map on paper; identify where the "Boss" and "Secret Items" are.
MakeCode
The Biome Construction Methodology: Create a world in MakeCode where tiles change when walked on (Narrative).
The Gravitational Constant Calibration: Program the player. Focus on "Weight"—does the hero float or stomp?
The Linguistic Lore Integration: Use "long text" blocks to build a story bridge between levels.
The Antagonist Pathfinding Experiment: Create "Ghost" or "Patrol" AI using block logic.
The Loot-Drop Variable Theorem: Use variables to track "Keys" or "Magic" needed for the story.
The Interdimensional Portal Transition: Logic for moving from the "Dark Forest" to the "Wizard's Tower."
The Sonic Aesthetic Finalisation: Add chiptune music. Transition: Click the "{ }" button to see the code.
Python
The Synthetic Intelligence Initiative: AI Partner: "Explain this Python Game Loop to me like I'm a pro gamer."
The Object-Oriented Sprite Synthesis: AI Partner: Use AI to generate a "Player Class" based on their MakeCode hero.
The Haptic Input Optimisation: Students' prompt: "Make my movement feel like it's on ice/slippery."
The Narrative Trigger Correlation: AI Partner: Help write if statements that trigger story text when ‘X’ meets ‘’
The Syntax Eradication Procedure: Students paste an error into AI and ask, "Where is my typo? Explain it simply."
The Kinetic Visual Enhancement: AI Partner: Ask AI for code to add "Screen Shake" or "Sparkle Particles."
The Boss Battle Logic Theorem: Use AI to write a unique boss pattern (e.g., "A dragon that shoots in circles").
The Grand Premiere Exhibition: Students present their games and share their most helpful AI prompts.
