COURSE OVERVIEW

Through the art of photography, we embark on a journey of visual storytelling and self-expression. This course is a gateway to exploring the creative and imaginative possibilities of this art form. Only a mobile phone is required to take part in this course, which will serve as an introduction to various photography styles. Join us in this captivating exploration of photography, where the possibilities are as endless as the imagination itself.

The first half of the course focuses on transitioning students from casual snapshots to intentional visual storytelling using their mobile phones. Students begin by analysing award-winning photography to develop a critical eye, then explore fundamental composition techniques in a practical setting. Key skills introduced include mastering viewpoint, applying the rule of thirds to create balanced and dynamic frames, and strategically using subject and background to eliminate distractions. This block concludes with a line-hunt challenge, where students utilise the skills developed in the first half of the course to employ horizontal, vertical, and leading lines to evoke specific emotions and guide the viewer’s eye through an image

In the second half, the curriculum shifts toward specialised genres and technical post-processing. Students delve into Portrait Photography, focusing on lighting and capturing human emotion, particularly through creative themed challenges. They are introduced to professional editing workflows using award-winning software packages to enhance their growing image library. The course then expands into Food and Nature Photography, where students apply "Citizen Science" by using the iNaturalist app to document local biodiversity. The final weeks challenge their creativity and communication skills further by culminating in the planning and execution of a Photographic Exhibition to showcase their journey of self-expression.
