NCAA Eligibility

Students planning to enroll in college as freshmen and be academically eligible to participate in Division I or Division II athletics must be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. To be certified by the

Clearinghouse a student must:

    • Graduate from high school
    • Successfully complete a core curriculum of at least 16 academic courses for Division 1. This core curriculum includes:
        • Minimum four years of English
        • Three years of math (Algebra 1 or higher).
        • Two years of social studies
        • Two years of natural or physical science (including at least one laboratory class)
        • One additional course in English, math or natural or physical science
        • Four additional academic courses which have been approved by the NCAA.
    • Have a grade-point average of 2.3 and a combined score on the SAT verbal and math sections OR a sum score on the ACT based on the sliding scale for Division I. Core GPA is calculated using the best 16 core courses that meet both progression (10 before seventh semester; seven in English, math or science; “locked in “) and subject-area requirements.

Academic scholarships cannot be awarded to a student unless the NCAA Clearinghouse has rated a student “eligible”. Interested students should contact their high school coach, the athletic director, and their counselor to obtain more information and the NCAA Clearinghouse forms. Information and an on-line application are available through the NCAA web site at www.eligibilitycenter.org and www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.
