There are many options for creating a portfolio using applications that NYU licenses on behalf of the community. We introduce several platforms below, each with different levels of complexity and production value. We start with the most basic, and work up to the most advanced.
With Google Drive, you can securely store and collaborate on documents created within Google’s suite of applications for education, including Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Collaborate in real time on your computer, phone, or tablet with anyone with a Google Account. Google applications are compatible with many Microsoft Office applications. A very basic portfolio can be organized within Google Drive utilizing a folder structure similar to one for organizing documents on your personal computer. An advantage to using Drive is the ability to easily share contents with both instructors and fellow students if necessary. It may not have the visual impact of a portfolio hosted on a website, it will get the job done. Note: you do not need to create an account to access NYU's Google Drive. Google Sites is a structured web site/blog creation tool included as part of the Google Docs suite of applications for education. The service also includes applications such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Jamboard and others. Sites can be used for organizing hosting a variety of web-based content, including student portfolios, collaborative group work, posting course resources, and more. This website was constructed using Google Sites. It is easier to create and organize a portfolio or other type of website using Google Sites than many of the platform options out there for creating a web-presence (one of which--Wordpress--is discussed below. NYU’s WordPress Service lets you build professional-looking websites to run your course, research project, or online portfolio. Although it carries more of a learning curve than a site-building tool like Google Sites, Wordpress offers a much greater range of tools for creating a customized appearance, incorporating discussion threads, adding multimedia, and organizing the site layout.
