The technology discussed on this page includes platforms for both instant message and video communications that support both collaborative and one-to-one communications. Because Zoom is fairly ubiquitous by now, we choose to focus here on some perhaps lesser known options available through NYU services or commercial applications. We don't review the communications features in Brightspace as these are reviewed elsewhere in this site.
Google Chat, or G-chat as it is commonly referred to, is an instant messaging application that can be used within Google Workspace to support collaboration between teams or individuals. G-Chat can also be used as a standalone application on a mobile phone or tablet to facilitate instant messaging. At Silver, the IT team uses G-Chat to coordinate operations when team members are in the field. Our Ed Tech office welcomes faculty and staff to use G-Chat to receive real time support when other types of communications or meeting arrangements are impractical or less expedient. You can locate G-Chat along the left hand sidebar menu within your Gmail account, or download the application from your preferred app store. Learn more.
Slack is a commercial instant messaging application that supports team-based collaboration and communication. Slack provides both paid and unpaid account options, and it is important to note that, unlike G-Chat, Slack does not yet meet NYU's security standards for official communications. That said, it does provide a very robust platform for team communications with options for creating messaging channels for specific project communications, creating private communication channels for 1:1 chat, and sharing documents and 3rd party application content (eg: Google documents, surveys, calendars, etc). It integrates with many 3rd party applications that may be of interest to our community of users. There's more of a learning curve with Slack than G-Chat, but for larger teams that required a layered, project-based approach to instant messaging, this is a good option. It's a good app to consider for courses that incorporate significant group-based work throughout the year. Learn more.
Google Meet (formerly known as Google Hangout) is Google's own video-conferencing platform available through NYU's Google Workspace. You may have noticed that when scheduling a meeting with your NYU Google Calendar, a window pops up that gives you the option of adding a video conference link to the meeting. With this option, you can choose to attach a Google Meet or a Zoom meeting link to your meeting invitation. Sometimes
