Junior Reserves Officers' Training Corps

JROTC is a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in secondary schools. The mission of JROTC is to instill the values of citizenship and leadership, service to the United States, and personal. Students are given the opportunity to apply leadership, communication skills, and teamwork in competitions and presentations. The Student Activities Office sponsors a drill meet, and a physical fitness competition.

CCSD JROTC Present Colors for Graduation 2025

Several CCSD Junior ROTC groups presented colors for their own schools' graduation ceremonies, as well as volunteering to present at other District graduations for schools without ROTC programs.

Durango Space Force Launches High Altitude Balloon

On April 30, SFJROTC cadets at Durango High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, successfully launched a high-altitude balloon with 4 cadet-built satellite simulators and two science department experiments, in front of the Durango student body. The flight lasted approximately 90 minutes and went to an altitude of roughly 94,000 feet! The recovery team hiked to the top of the mountains near Lake Mead to recover the payloads. The pictures show some details of the payloads, launch, and recovery. The cadets will spend the remainder of the semester performing data analysis from their payloads. Durango instructor, retired Lt. Col. Jason Kimbel, and his cadets were supported by the Aldrin Family Foundation and Dr. Andrew Aldrin.

Super Bowl LVIII Color Guard Visits CCSD JROTC Programs

On February 8, 2024 the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard, in town to present Colors at the Super Bowl, came to visit CCSD JROTC cadets at Sierra Vista HS and Bonanza HS. The Joint Armed Forces Color Guard provided a demonstration, question and answer session, and a workshop for the cadets.

Space Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps

Durango High School is officially one of just ten schools nationally to be named a Space Force JROTC. An activation ceremony was held November 2, 2021 to commemorate the designation. Cadets received lapel pins at the ceremony.
