Canvas is the exclusive LMS (Learning Management System) for the UH main campus.
If your course was made from a Canvas course or if you manually brought in content from another course into a new Canvas shell, it's a good idea to double-check the content to make sure it's right. Here's a list of things to review after you've copied or imported your content:
You can choose to Unpublish your course to prevent users from accessing your course material.
Revise course syllabus and instructor contact information.
Update due dates and availability dates on assignments, discussions, and quizzes
Revise course announcements
Any dates listed on pages, modules, titles, or anywhere else in the course.
Review Canvas Files to make sure all files, including images, you are using are on the Canvas site, and delete any files you are not using.
Verify your Publisher and engagement tool connections (if applicable).
If using the Respondus lockdown browser:
If Respondus Monitor is not meant to be enabled for the exam, ensure that the word “Webcam” is removed from the exam’s title in the exam’s settings.
If Monitor is required for the exam, open the Lockdown Browser Dashboard for the course and ensure the Web Monitor is deployed. Tutorial: How to deploy Canvas exam with LDB & Monitor.
Note:
Verify activities to be used in the course are published.
Draft State settings are retained in course imports. If an assignment is unpublished in a course, the assignment will also be unpublished in the content import.
Course content imports do not include enrollment-related data, including course users, collaborations, conferences, groups, sections, and feature option settings.
Make sure the course content that you create is accessible (PPT)
Run the Link validator to ensure there are no broken links.
Use the “Student View” option to ensure that your course is displayed exactly as you want it to be displayed to your students. Communicate with students using the Canvas Mail inbox and remind them to enable notifications.
Please note: Copying FROM a Canvas course is different from Copying TO a Canvas course/section. Please refer to the Copying to a Canvas course/section link for more information about the "Copy to" direct share option.
You can create your course based on a DEV template or previous semester through the CRS. To do so, select "Copy from my previous course" and then the the specific course from the list of your former courses.
You can also manually copy over content from a DEV shell or previous semester.
**Note: We DO NOT recommend importing an entire course shell into an existing course with developed content. It is best to import the course content into an empty course or Canvas DEV shell or to import only specific content into a developed course.
(If you do not already have one) Request a Canvas course shell.
Enter your empty Canvas course site.
In Course Navigation, click the Settings link.
Click the Import Course Content link.
In the Content Type drop-down menu, select the Copy a Canvas Course option. The screen will update with more options.
Before searching for a course to copy from, check the Include completed courses check box. This ensures you can copy course content from even your older Canvas course sites.
In the Search for a course drop-down menu, select the course you would like to copy from. Note: We recommend copying all content and then cleaning up the material you don’t need rather than copying multiple times from the same course.
To import all content from the course, select the All Content radio button.
If you want to select specific content, click the Select specific content radio button. Optional: If you selected specific content, you will have to select it after importing the course. Please see this tutorial for more information.
Check the box next to Adjust events and due dates to make adjustments to the course date range. Select Shift dates to allow Canvas to pick dates within the set date range for all assignments and events OR select Remove dates to remove all dates from assignments and events.
Click the Import button.
