Music is a universal language that is enjoyed across the world and has many powerful qualities. At Scarning, we understand the power music has in uniting people, but also the power it has in soothing and uplifting one’s mood. We embrace these qualities within our curriculum through reflection and discussion, within formal music lessons, within assemblies, and across the wider curriculum where music is used as a tool to aid memory, support focus, and lift our spirits by simply being enjoyed! Our music curriculum at Scarning gives all pupils the opportunity to make music together through participating in an enjoyable and educational experience. We provide, and encourage children to get involved in an assortment of musical experiences, which aims to build confidence, develop new skills and create a community feel to our school.Teaching across the school in lessons focuses on Charanga, which exposes the children to a wide range of genres. Each unit has cross-curricular links as well as links to other year group units. This enables children to develop their appreciation of similar genres at a deeper level. It also develops a progression of skills as they revisit and extend their leaning in different year groups. Individual musical skills are developed through practical activities enabling them to explore and improve their skills as musicians and singers. Children engage in lessons designed to develop their understanding of rhythm and pitch, as well as develop their ability follow a beat and compose. They have the opportunity to work individually and in a group to create an ensemble piece. Children learn technical vocabulary to describe the music and are encouraged to share their thoughts, appreciations and feelings about the music.Whole school singing assemblies help children to learn the structure and organisation of music. They develop an appreciation of different genres and styles as well as the emotions and narratives of a song. We sing together as well as in parts to encourage children to listen to each other and think about pace and tone. The whole school also takes part in the Norfolk Music Hub Big Sing each year, either at the event or through the virtual link at school. In KS1 children explore and develop skills as singers and musicians. Using a developing knowledge of musical structure, they begin to compose simple melodies using tuned instruments and voices moving to performing these as individuals and in an ensemble with an emphasis on starting and ending together. These skills continue to develop in KS2 and progress to more complex composing using a variety of notes and patterns. Whole class instrument teaching takes place for one term in Year 4 and small group guitar lessons are also offered to KS2 children. End of year performances are encouraged to enable children to work towards this in their lessons and to encourage and inspire other children. We have a successful KS2 choir which meet once a week at lunchtimes and perform in the community at Christmas and as part of Neatherd High School Summer concert. Our aim is to inspire children by helping them to understand that we can all make music- with our mouths, with musical instruments, with computers! Lessons provide pupils with the knowledge and skill development needed to become creative individuals who are appreciative of and inspired by a range of different music genres and styles, from a range of different cultural backgrounds.
