Our maths cafes are well attended - this is a chance to try out some maths with your child, ask the teachers questions and have fun!
A mastery approach to teaching maths is about breaking down complex concepts into smaller learning steps. Children will build a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. You can find out more about this here.
The Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach is a system of learning that uses physical and visual aids to build a child’s understanding of abstract topics. Pupils are introduced to a new mathematical concept through the use of concrete resources (e.g. objects, counters etc). When they are comfortable solving problems with physical aids, they are given problems with pictures – usually pictorial representations of the concrete objects they were using.
Then they are asked to solve problems where they only have the abstract eg. numbers or other symbols. Building these steps helps pupils better understand the relationship between numbers and the real world, and therefore helps secure their understanding of the mathematical concepts they are learning.
See our CPA progression document here
Early number sense is vital for children to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts which is essential for them to become confident and competent mathematicians. In EYFS and KS1 we enhance the maths curriculum with the NCETM Mastering Number programme.
In Maths lessons at Scarning, you will see a supportive and inclusive classroom atmosphere where all children are encouraged to participate and succeed. Maths lessons are pacy and very interactive with lots of discussion.
The school’s curriculum identifies opportunities when maths is used as a tool across the wider curriculum which allows children to make useful connections between identified mathematical ideas or to anticipate practical problems they are likely to encounter in adult life. Parents and carers are invited into the school to join their children at our very popular cafe events and we keep good links with the local High Schools for our prospective students.
The children's books show the different elements of maths fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Their responses will progress in complexity as the child moves through the year groups. Have a look at some of the work.
